Research Associate, Health Data Analytics & Evaluation

The Physician Learning Program in the Office of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate, Health Data Analytics & Evaluation. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately10 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Physician Learning Program (PLP) is a collaborative initiative jointly operated by the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, through the Office of Lifelong Learning, and the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine through Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development. PLP is dedicated to improving healthcare by supporting physicians and their teams with meaningful, evidence-informed data and tools for reflective practice.

Reporting to the Managing Director of PLP, the Research Associate will work collaboratively with the PLP Calgary team of project managers, human centered designers, information designers, medical directors, and external partners on the development and implementation of evidence informed QI projects that support reflective practice across the care continuum. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Data Management & Integration

• Advise on research methods to ensure the project is set up properly to measure change and impact over time
• Integrate, clean, and manage complex datasets from multiple systems to ensure longitudinal consistency and accuracy
• Conduct data mapping, transformation, and technical documentation, including variable definitions and quality assurance protocols
• Contribute to interdisciplinary teams to co-create sustainable, scalable QI solutions based on real-world clinical data

Data Analysis, Evaluation & Reporting

• Perform advanced statistical analyses (e.g., R, Stata) to generate insights that inform clinical reflection and system-level outcome measures
• Conduct regression analysis and quantitatively analyze data to understand change in physician practices and determine statistical significance of change over time
• Lead quantitative evaluation activities to assess initiative effectiveness, scalability, and impact
• Collaborate with project teams to use real-time data and feedback for adaptive learning and improvement

Scholarly Dissemination

• Support ethics applications for data informed project including study objectives and design, research methods and procedures
• Contribute to scholarly dissemination of project results and outcomes including drafting methods, design, statistical analysis and discussion for manuscripts and conference proceedings

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Master's degree in a health science-related field required with an interest in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Informatics; Equivalencies of concurrent graduate education and experience may be considered
• Minimum of 1- 3 years of technical experience working with health data, preferably in a QI or research environment
• Advanced proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, SAS) and demonstrated ability to present and interpret data using visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, R, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Demonstrated expertise in managing, cleaning, and analyzing complex, longitudinal health datasets
• Knowledge of implementation science frameworks strategies, and qualitative evaluation approaches would be an asset
• Knowledge of Alberta's health data systems and platforms (e.g., Connect Care, physician claims, DAD etc.) and familiarity with health care systems, academic environments and provincial QI initiatives
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications and tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams for effective collaboration and communication
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
• Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered
