The Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Specialist, Web Services DevOps for approximately 12 months.

The Development/Operations Specialist (Web) (DevOps Web) works as part of a multi-disciplined team responsible for the development and maintenance of the University of Calgary's web hosting environment, including the Drupal-based enterprise web content management system. This position is responsible for the architecture, administration, development, documentation, and maintenance of the hosting environment(s), automated workflows, and systems integrations. The UCalgary web system is considered a Mission Critical business application and will require a high degree of expertise in various tools.

The candidate is well-versed with web hosting software stacks (including but not limited to LAMP, nginx), Linux, Git repository management (managed in GitLab), debugging, and container-based server environments (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).

This DevOps (Web) role will report directly to the Manager, Web Services to ensure adherence to IT procedures and standards for systems administration. The DevOps (Web) role will work closely with Web Service's Service Analyst for assignments and service updates, as well as Web Service's Web Developers to ensure hosting needs for the enterprise web content management system.

This role provides a critical, niche skillset required to not only maintain the stability, security and integrity of the web system and its environments but will also lead the direction of future planning of the web system in collaboration with the Cloud and Infrastructure team.

In conjunction with the "One UCalgary" strategic plan for the University, the expertise of this role must be comfortable pivoting between priorities and potential outcomes to mitigate high impacting reputational and financial risks.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ownership of CI/CD processes for web hosting
  • Performance tuning of the hosting environment
  • Documentation of processes, identification and planning of improvements
  • Collaborating closely with technical & operations teams
  • Work with the Manager to define the requirements for a hosting environment
  • Implementation of scripts and processes
  • Day-to-day operations and monitoring
  • Assisting with application migration into hosting environment
  • Work with the development team to integrate into the workflow
  • Plan the implementation of the CI/CD processes
  • Plan the long-term evolution of the platform to allow for continued development, custom cases, and ad hoc requests
  • Assist in setting standards and direction for DevOps activities
  • Support and mentor team members
  • Act as an open, approachable leader both for technical and customer service aspects
  • Participate in Team environment for information, skills and knowledge sharing
  • Keep technical knowledge current, and disseminate knowledge to others
  • This role will provide oversight and mentorship to student analysts as they assist with system maintenance and client intake
  • Providing guidance and best practices to developers using the CI/CD processes 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in development and deployment
  • 4+ years of experience in large-scale systems support
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines with strict SLAs
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g. New Relic, ELK stack)
  • Experience with configuration management and automated deployment (e.g. Ansible, Jenkins, Puppet, and/or Chef)
  • Skills and experience in web hosting software systems is required in this position
  • Working knowledge of SDLC, OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, distributed caching solutions
  • Knowledge of Git
  • Experience with a SaaS, globally-distributed multi-tenant system would be a preference
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Additional Value in having the following:
    • Experience with microservice architecture, Redis, ELK stack
    • Experience with networking principles and technologies (Load Balancers, VPN, DNS, NAT, Firewalls)
    • Experience with Azure; would accept experience with AWS and/or GCP
    • Experience with ITIL
    • Experience with systems scripting and automation (Go, Python, Bash)
