The Physician Learning Program in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Information Design & Digital Engagement Specialist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 9 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Physician Learning Program (PLP) is a collaborative initiative jointly operated by the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, through the Office of Lifelong Learning, and the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine through Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development. PLP is dedicated to improving healthcare by supporting physicians and their teams with meaningful, evidence-informed data and tools for reflective practice.

Reporting to the Manager, Physician Learning Program.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Design and Content Development

  • Design and Create Knowledge Tools & Products: Develop external and internal-facing materials (presentations, academic and information posters, infographics, decision aids, clinical care pathways, annual reports, and project templates) that facilitate understanding of complex QI concepts for healthcare professionals
  • Data Visualization and Evidence-Based Design: Use data visualization techniques to create accessible, visually engaging reports, knowledge tools and products that support data-driven decision-making, practice improvement, and clinical reflection
  • Project Dissemination: Present project findings visually in both academic and non-academic settings and ensure all materials adhere to PLP's privacy and data-handling protocols
  • Partnerships and Collaboration: Work closely with medical directors and project stakeholders to identify the best strategies for conveying physician practice data and test these designs with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to ensure effectiveness

Digital Engagement, Social Media, and User Experience (UX)

  • Enhance Digital Engagement: Design and implement digital engagement strategies, utilizing data and feedback to continuously adapt content to physicians' needs
  • Community Building and Support Networks: Facilitate online communities (e.g., discussion forums, virtual workshops) to encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and peer learning among physicians
  • Social Media and Online Presence: Manage PLP's social media channels to engage healthcare professionals, promote resources, and share QI insights‿ensuring consistency with the program's educational mission and objectives
  • Website Management: Update and maintain the PLP website
  • Stay Current with Trends: Keep up to date with trends in digital learning technologies, UX best practices, and social media strategies to improve PLP's digital presence and learner experience

Problem Solving and Collaboration

  • Identify Needs and Define Scope: Engage with project management team to understand needs and define the scope of information design and data visualization element
  • Information Design Advocacy: Promote information design methodologies, demonstrating their value in supporting QI initiatives and enhancing digital learning experiences
  • Collaboration with Program Team: Work closely with the PLP team to ensure that all learning materials align with program goals and contribute to PLP's mission

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Design, Instructional Design, Digital Media, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience applying information design, systems thinking or digital engagement principles in a quality improvement healthcare setting
  • Expertise in applying design principles in healthcare settings with a focus on QI, data visualization, and audit & feedback
  • Problem-solving skills within the discipline, with some cross-functional involvement
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), including Office 365 and Teams
  • Advanced proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
  • Experience with website management (e.g., WordPress) and social media platforms
  • Comfortable collaborating with partners at various levels within healthcare and academic environments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for explaining complex information clearly
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities
  • Familiarity with university and institutional processes and policies
