The Brand Experience Team within VP Communications & Community Engagement is currently seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term Front-End Developer for approximately 12 months.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Experience, and working closely with the Senior Developer, Digital Experience, the Front-end Developer collaborates on the production of visual and motion designs that leverage UX best-practices and turns desired outcomes into operationalized digital elements. The work includes overall responsibility for creating user experience elements via visual and functional implementation. The role requires the effective management of competing interests and deadlines, and the ability to manage priorities within a fast-paced, SCRUM-based, multi-team development environment. The ideal candidate for this position will have a combination of creativity and technical expertise, with a strong eye for detail and design.

The Front-end Developer is a key member of the Digital Experience team who focuses on taking product enhancements and new feature requests from design to execution. This role will focus on the support of a central digital design system, including the build and documentation of  custom elements and reusable UI components. This role is also tasked with ensuring that produced code successfully meets user needs on a variety of digital devices, as well as meeting university visual, brand, accessibility and technical standards. In short, this role writes code that determines how our digital elements look and operate with the intent of setting the campus standard.

Please note, this is a hybrid role and requires 3 days a week in office at the University's main campus. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Understanding and applying effective use of digital design and display technologies for digital applications and/or websites while adhering to university brand standards.
  • Determining technical solutions for experience challenges including the coding of appropriate solutions in a way that can be reusable by others on campus across multiple technologies and/or devices.
  • Striving to attain industry standards in digital usability.
  • Providing input into the front-end prototype and design outcomes.
  • Finding maintainable and scalable development solutions for approved prototypes.
  • Work with the senior experience designer and front- and back-end developers to build processes and procedures that ensure a robust, well-tested and user-validated build.
  • Working with development teams in a SCRUM environment.
  • Provide input on project scope and timelines, as well as prioritization.
  • Deliver against the timelines and scope of the project.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field of study.
  • 4 years development experience with software design patterns and logic, multiple languages and paradigms, code testing, evaluation and review.
  • Intermediate technical expertise and experience in mobile-first frameworks with a primary focus on Bootstrap 3/4 supported with a strong understanding of HTML5, CSS (SASS) and JS (ECMAScript/jQuery/libraries), as well as experience with Drupal 8 theme and module development using PHP, SQL and Twig templating.
  • Experience working from design flats and rapid prototyping tools such as Axure, as well as agile collaboration systems such as Jira within SCRUM, Agile and waterfall development teams.
  • Experience trouble-shooting and fixing software bugs, and testing code against a wide variety of digital devices and modern browsers.
  • Experience with custom development within the LiveWhale event platform.
  • Experience with code storage, versioning and promotion using Git.
  • Demonstrated interest in remaining at the forefront of trends and technologies; willingness to experiment with new ideas and tools.
  • Desire to work in a team setting with design, UX, and content specialists.
  • Experience working with design systems and related products such as Storybook is considered an asset.
