The School of Public Policy is currently seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term Manager, Communications and Marketing for approximately 10 months.

This position reports to the Director of Communications and Marketing in the School of Public Policy (SPP) and work in collaboration with the Office of Communications and Community Engagement to enhance the local, national and international recognition, influence and impact of the SPP.

The position supports the development, implementation, measurement and assessment of the marketing and communications strategy and tactics for the SPP. In collaboration with the Director of Communications and Marketing, you ensure the SPP's work aligns with and strengthens communications, marketing and reputation management within the strategic direction of the University of Calgary.

The position requires strong leadership and people skills, creativity, exceptional communications and marketing expertise, superior organizational skills, fiscal accountability, and experience with evaluation metrics and reporting. You will lead tactical initiatives and support a collaborative culture within the SPP, the university and a diverse group of key stakeholders.

You have demonstrated skills in marketing and communications strategy development and tactical implementation; project management; and exceptional communication skills to create compelling stories, web and marketing content.

This position works in collaboration with the Director of Communications and Marketing to develop and implement SPP's marketing and communications strategy, including brand management, advertising and marketing, media relations, website content, social media, special events, and internal communications.

This position supervises a small team of communications staff and freelance editors and designers to delivers on tactics that support the SPP's business goals and communication strategy. You will lead brand and marketing for SPP including a focus on student recruitment for Graduate Studies in the Master of Public Policy and Sustainable Energy Development programs.

The position works in collaboration with the Office of Communications and Community Engagement to ensure that marketing and communications strategies developed in SPP align with the University of Calgary brand and help to advance overall institutional direction. As part of the university's communications team, you support the crisis communications team in the event of a university-wide emergency.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Manages contracts and relationships with external contractors, freelancers and design providers.
  • Ensures alignment of marketing and communications projects so human and financial resources are focused on SPP priorities.
  • Develops, implements, measures and assesses marketing strategies and tactics based on industry best practices and key performance indicators to elevate SPP's reputation and brand locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Leads the department's work with SPP's Graduate Program Director and Deputy Graduate Program Director on student recruitment, marketing and communications products.
  • Develops trustworthy and productive working relationships with SPP staff as well as colleagues across the university community and external agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with other university communicators and marketing professionals, members of the Office of Communications and Community Engagement and external funding agencies.
  • Provides communications advice to senior leaders and faculty on initiatives and issues to create a positive image for the SPP and the University of Calgary.
  • Improves and broadens the reputation of the SPP locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Implements and adheres to university and SPP policies and procedures.
  • Supports internal communications, working with the senior leadership team at SPP, to foster a high-performance culture.
  • Creates an environment where knowledge sharing, training tools, coaching and staff development is encouraged.
  • Coaches and mentors staff; supports team members' professional development plans.
  • Works with faculty and staff to revise and maintain an engaging website for the SPP.
  • Supports the delivery of successful events that meet SPP objectives by engaging internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides leadership on key SPP projects, such as website redevelopment.
  • Performing other duties as required by program operations and assigned by the SPP Director, SPP Associate Director, or Director of Communications and Marketing.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A post-secondary degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in marketing and communications, including demonstrated people and project management experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing marketing and communications plans for target audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience supporting event planning and community outreach.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build relationships with a diverse external stakeholder group and across campus.
  • Experience producing exceptional marketing and communication for internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and on deadlines, and to handle numerous priorities and competing deadlines.
