Description
The Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Millwright.
Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. Campus is divided into 6 operating zones.
This position reports to Maintenance & Planning-Maintenance Supervisor. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
The Millwright is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all rotating equipment and systems. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands. Problems encountered are from moderate to high complexity due to a vast scope of equipment and systems to be maintained, as well as a wide range of system variety from antiquated, obsolete equipment, up to the newest high tech electrical processes. The diverse workload involves operational deadlines, shifting priorities, and simultaneous organization, all of which can impact the performance of each facility or group of facilities.
This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfer to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on stand by. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies.
This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 metres, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms pounds that may require performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
The primary purpose of this position is to perform skilled, qualified trade level installation, maintenance, troubleshoot and repair of stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. Duties include:
- Reading diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
- Operating equipment and dollies to move heavy machinery and parts.
- Competency with rigging and lifting equipment a definite asset.
- Fitting bearings, aligning gears and shafts, attaching motors, and connecting couplings and belts (often to within a fraction of a millimetre tolerance).
- Aligning and testing equipment and make any necessary adjustments.
- Performing preventive and operational maintenance using procedures such as vibration analysis, and repair or replace defective parts when necessary.
- Trouble-shooting hydraulic, pneumatic and programmable logic controls.
- May be required to complete some welding and fabrication as well as maintain an inventory of replacement parts.
- May be required to monitor the work of contractors to ensure work is carried out to specifications, university standards and code.
- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
- Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
- Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
- Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
- Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
- Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
- Is willing to learn and adapt to change and is expected to actively participate in own training and development in coordination with the department.

Qualifications / Requirements:
- Provincial or interprovincial Millwright Trade Certification with 3-5 years of experience.
- Must be familiar with recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation, and safety procedures associated with the millwright trade.
- Must have experience in commercial, industrial and institutional electrical applications.
- Experience with the maintenance of rotary compressors and vacuum pumps a definite asset.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals is required.
- Must be able to work on ladders at various heights, work in confined spaces, in all weather conditions.
- Must have mechanical ability and be able to use hand and power tools.
- Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc.
- Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Must have the ability to work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner.
- Experience and/or exposure to predictive maintenance technologies i.e. vibration analysis, NDT, thermography a definite asset.
- Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends.
- Must have proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
- Must be able to manage own time effectively.
- Must be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices, such as iPhone, Smartphone etc.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
