The Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The McCaig Institute for Bone & Joint Health, within the Department of Medicine, at the University of Calgary, is currently accepting applications for a Research Assistant for the IIA-PATH (Indigenous Inflammatory Arthritis Prevention and Treatment for Health Equity) research study. 

This position requires multi-site travel with the majority of time spent at the University of Calgary Foothills Medical Campus, and the remainder spent working at various sub-sites in Calgary and community locations in southern Alberta. Flexibility is required for occasional activities held outside of business hours.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Supporting research program or project activities, working with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Investigators, and other research team members
  • Project start up activities, such as preparation of ethics submissions, creating project standard operating procedures and preparing data collection tools
  • Assembling and maintenance of project documents
  • Coordinating study visits
  • Data collection
  • Synthesis of collected data
  • Literature searches
  • Preparation of research results in written or presentation formats
  • Coordinating various community engagement events and network activities

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Degree in Health Science (or equivalent), with previous health research experience
  • Experience in health research experience within an academic setting, and in particular related to musculoskeletal health research
  • Experience or demonstrated understanding of Indigenous health and Indigenous community engagement will be prioritized. For example:
    • Completion of The Fundamentals of OCAP® online course
    • Completion of Indigenous Canada online course
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Engagement of community members, and patients through practicum, work and/or research experience is required
  • Knowledge and demonstrated training of ethical human research standards, particularly Tri-Council (TCPS2.0), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Health Canada Division
  • Excellent professionalism, diplomacy, and a high degree of confidentiality
  • Experience in developing protocols, surveys, study materials, standard operating procedures, or adherence to study guidelines is required
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills required
  • Initiative to solve complex problems
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports and conducting literature reviews for the purpose of presentation and publication
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to carry out tasks with little direction
  • Open to learning, skill development and willing to accept new challenges and assignments
