Description

The Department of Advanced Technical Skills Simulation Laboratory) in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Position Title. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Advanced Technical Skills and Simulation Lab (ATSSL) Simulation Technician and Data Specialist reports to the ATSSL Manager.  While working independently most of the time, the Simulation Technician and Data Specialist will receive direction from ATSSL Coordinators and Simulation Consultants regarding processes and workflows.

The ATSSL offers a comprehensive range of simulation modalities, including human and animal cadaveric tissue and theater-based simulations. It is supported by the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) at the University of Calgary (UCalgary) to deliver simulation-based medical education (SBME) to a diverse group of learners, from students to practicing healthcare professionals. The facility supports simultaneous sessions for both small and large groups.
 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Report issues or challenges to the Coordinator CSL or ATSSL Manager and suggest process or procedural improvements
  • Coordinate activities in the ATSSL, working with the Coordinator CSL, Simulation Consultants, and Faculty to ensure the correct materials, instruments, equipment, and supplies are available for each session
  • Use interpersonal skills to interact with co-workers, faculty members, and facility users in a professional and courteous manner
  • Take responsibility for continuous upgrading of technical skills and knowledge
  • Maintain technical and safety processes and procedures according to established policies
  • Plan and effectively manage time to accomplish tasks, including preparing for teaching sessions
  • Ensure the reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment and trainers, and train other staff and students in equipment usage and laboratory protocols
  • Manage the preparation, staging, care, and maintenance of task trainers, simulators, and accessory simulation equipment for educational sessions
  • Co-develop processes, procedures, protocols, and manuals using highly refined technical writing skills
  • Manage equipment, trainers, and inventory
  • Adhere to confidentiality and professionalism during assessments and exams
  • Assist in compiling, analyzing, and visualizing data for annual reports using Excel, Power BI, and SharePoint to support data-driven insights and decision-making
  • Track, process, and maintain records of booking requests, ensuring accurate scheduling and efficient reporting
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) standards as established by UCalgary and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety
  • Identify opportunities to improve data management workflows and enhance reporting processes using Office 365 tools

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in Basic Science, Anatomy, Health Sciences, or a related field, OR a Technical Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, IT, or a related technical field is required
  • 3+ years of related technical experience in medical education, simulation, or research is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision, exercising judgment within established guidelines
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in Office 365, including Excel, SharePoint, and Power BI, for developing and maintaining data-driven insights
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with structured datasets, with the ability to present complex information clearly
  • Experience with SharePoint for data integration and collaboration is an asset
  • Ability to create interactive dashboards and visualizations using Power BI to support decision-making
  • Ability to work independently in a team environment
  • Good physical health, with the ability to move tables, carts, and other equipment, and lift up to 70 lbs
  • Flexible work schedule, with availability for weekend shifts as needed
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are critical to success
