The The Electrical Utility Unit  within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Utility and Distribution Electrician.

The Electrical Utility Unit is responsible to ensure that all the UofC High Voltage electrical utility systems are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. The Electrical Utility Unit is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all Campus wide electrical power distribution and lighting systems. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands. Problems encountered are from moderate to high complexity due to a vast scope of equipment and systems to be maintained, as well as a wide range of system variety from antiquated, obsolete equipment, up to the newest high tech electrical processes. The diverse workload involves operational deadlines, shifting priorities, and simultaneous organization, all of which can impact the performance of each facility or group of facilities. This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: energized electrical systems, scaffolds, swingstage, and lifts of heights up to 40 metres, heavy lifting, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities, confined spaces, and controlled hazardous environments. Work is performed under minimal supervision, and completion of record documentation is required.

Operation of the Universities High Voltage electrical system in accordance to the Enmax/UofC/ Foothills Operational Agreements and the current Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code/Canadian Electrical Code and Occupational health and Safety Act.

This position reports to the Electrical Utilities & Distribution Team Leader, and is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfers to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. As this position will be a First Responder in the Campus Emergency Response Plan, rotational standby and overtime will be expected.

Primary Purpose of the Position (Key purpose, functions, roles): 

To complete assigned installations, alterations, maintenance, and repairs to a broad range of electrical equipment and systems, as well as carrying out operational functions. The Utility and Distribution Electrician will be required to communicate with customers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, technical support and other trade staff in order to successfully complete their task. Work must be performed in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (current legislated edition), University of Calgary standards, policies, and procedures, and any applicable building codes. Completion of records related to the work is required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Ensures that work assigned is completed as required by the standards of the trade, meeting all required codes, and University of Calgary specifications, standards and procedures.
• Responsible for operating and maintaining the University of Calgary electrical systems to a standard that promotes life safety, asset preservation, and reliable uninterrupted service.
• Responsible to become familiar with all existing University electrical systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment within the industry, as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
• Follow required University and OH&S safety procedures and ensures personal, public, and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous electrical situations.
• Explores all options and innovative solutions required to ensure minimum electrical interruptions of building systems and equipment.
• Maintain records, as-built blueprints, and schematic diagrams when altering any existing or new systems.
• Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in safe working order.
• Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, contractors, consultants, suppliers, supervisor, and members of the University community.
• Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
• Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
• Ensures that personal hygiene, attire and grooming is appropriate for the work environment.

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Active Master Electrician Certificate.
• Alberta Journeyperson Electrical Certificate or equivalent.
• A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
• Must have good hearing and color vision and be able to perform physically demanding work in all types of weather conditions.
• Knowledge of recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation, and safety procedures associated with the electrical trade.
• Experience in commercial and industrial electrical applications with a good understanding of the current Canadian Electrical Code.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals.
• Able to work on projects that range from a minimally supervised independent effort, to a large team based task involving many co-workers and trade designations.
• Knowledge in the installation, maintenance, and operation of the following systems: 120/208, 277/480, 347/600 volt power distribution; incandescent, fluorescent, and high intensity discharge lighting and control; standby generators, battery banks, U.P.S. emergency power systems; electrical metering; motor and motor control; heating and cooling control; variable frequency drives and soft start motor starters; troubleshooting, repair, and retrofitting of electrical systems.
• Experience is required in any of the following areas 2,300 volt up to 13,200 volt power distribution; electrical project coordination from inception to completion within specific time frames; design, estimating, as built and record keeping; harmonic distortion, power quality monitoring and mitigation methods; power metering.
• Must be able to work on ladders at various heights, work in confined spaces, in all weather conditions.
• Continuous upgrading of technical expertise is essential.
