The The Electrical Utility Unit within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Utility and Distribution Electrician.
The Electrical Utility Unit is responsible to ensure that all the UofC High Voltage electrical utility systems are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. The Electrical Utility Unit is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all Campus wide electrical power distribution and lighting systems. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands. Problems encountered are from moderate to high complexity due to a vast scope of equipment and systems to be maintained, as well as a wide range of system variety from antiquated, obsolete equipment, up to the newest high tech electrical processes. The diverse workload involves operational deadlines, shifting priorities, and simultaneous organization, all of which can impact the performance of each facility or group of facilities. This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: energized electrical systems, scaffolds, swingstage, and lifts of heights up to 40 metres, heavy lifting, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities, confined spaces, and controlled hazardous environments. Work is performed under minimal supervision, and completion of record documentation is required.
Operation of the Universities High Voltage electrical system in accordance to the Enmax/UofC/ Foothills Operational Agreements and the current Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code/Canadian Electrical Code and Occupational health and Safety Act.
This position reports to the Electrical Utilities & Distribution Team Leader, and is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfers to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. As this position will be a First Responder in the Campus Emergency Response Plan, rotational standby and overtime will be expected.
Primary Purpose of the Position (Key purpose, functions, roles):
To complete assigned installations, alterations, maintenance, and repairs to a broad range of electrical equipment and systems, as well as carrying out operational functions. The Utility and Distribution Electrician will be required to communicate with customers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, technical support and other trade staff in order to successfully complete their task. Work must be performed in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (current legislated edition), University of Calgary standards, policies, and procedures, and any applicable building codes. Completion of records related to the work is required.
