The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory and Digital Resource Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 14 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Laboratory and Teaching Resource Technician is a member of the UCVM Research Office Team who reports to the Manager, Discipline Teaching Technicians and receives direction from course coordinators and faculty members. This position is responsible for: 1) Supporting several undergraduate (DVM) and graduate courses and rotations across all years of the veterinary curriculum, with the potential for work at both the Foothills and Spy Hill Campuses and for occasional trips off campus; 2) Creating digital learning material for DVM courses, graduate teaching, and training of the UCVM research community; 3) Supporting the UCVM research community, providing technical training on various laboratory techniques, overseeing the maintenance of and training on shared research equipment, and acting as a subject-matter expert on U of C resources, policies, and procedures relating to laboratory operations; 4) When time permits, assisting with projects related to UCVM operations.

This is a maternity leave replacement position.  

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Prepares, develops, and evaluates laboratory exercises for use in teaching; researches and optimizes known laboratory protocols for teaching purposes; and instructs on proper laboratory technique during labs
• Procures, prepares, catalogues, and archives suitable teaching specimens (including off campus collection, where appropriate)
• Organizes, revises, and archives teaching materials including laboratory manuals, digital images, video, and interactive learning experiences
• Orders required equipment and supplies and updates all equipment, supply, and specimen inventories
• Operates and maintains inventory for the UCVM Cleaning and First Aid Supplies store
• Ensures laboratory equipment is in working order (performs basic cleaning and maintenance and arranges for repairs) and laboratory materials (consumables) are appropriately dispensed
• Conducts research on current issues/technologies relevant to UCVM
• Ensures the laboratory environment is safe for all stakeholders and is operated within established SOPs
• Instructs undergraduate and graduate UCVM students in safe and correct laboratory technique. Provides support and coaching for research laboratory staff where required
• Contributes to the creation/revision of SOPs and ensures they are adhered to by all laboratory users such as students, faculty, external clients and researchers
• Assists with projects related to UCVM Research Office operations
• Assists with projects related to UCVM operations, which may include assistance with database creation
• Contributes to the Hazard Assessment process, which may include participation on the UCVM Safety Improvement Team (SIT)
• Advises the Manager, Discipline Teaching Technicians of any incident or occupational illness as outlined in University of Calgary Safety and Security protocols

Qualifications / Requirements:

• A Master¿s degree in a relevant discipline is required. Disciplines include (but are not limited to) laboratory technology, genetics, molecular biology, parasitology, immunology, bacteriology, veterinary medicine, and virology
• 2 years experience optimizing and successfully troubleshooting research protocols is required
• 2 years experience in the use and basic maintenance of a range of laboratory equipment is required
• Demonstrable communication skills are required; written or visual examples of past communication such as manuals, video, or other instructional material may be requested
• Intermediate knowledge level of Microsoft Office Applications is required
• Possessing a full valid class 5 driver¿s license is required
• Working knowledge of veterinary medical terminology is considered an asset
• Experience with molecular biology techniques is considered an asset
• Experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is considered an asset
• Experience creating digital teaching/presentation material, including videos and animations, is considered an asset
• TA experience is considered an asset
• Experience using imaging software programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) and web-based programs/programming is considered an asset
• Experience with database maintenance is considered an asset
