The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine  at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in in Black Peoples¿ Health (Nutritional Epidemiology).

Job Description:

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

Black people in Canada face health inequities. A major factor related to these health inequities is nutritional status. To address health inequities, we seek to characterize nutrition and metabolic health to effectively prevent, detect, and intervene in terms of disease susceptibility, progression, resilience, reversibility, and treatment strategies for diseases and conditions among Black people in Canada. The postdoctoral scholar will:

1. Conduct systematic reviews on Black peoples health
2. Conduct statistical analysis (using STATA) of Statistics Canada datasets
3. Develop survey instrument and collect survey data

Duties will include the following:

• Assist Principal Investigator in the design and development of research project
• Complete quantitative analysis of Statistics Canada datasets including multiple regression with the use of STATA software
• Develop survey tool
• Pilot test survey tool
• Administer and collect survey
• Develop and submit research proposals
• Coordinate data collection process
• Apply advanced theoretical and/or analytical techniques
• Write papers for publication
• Develop presentations for events, conferences and other knowledge mobilization products
• Contribute to and assist in submitting research grants proposals
• Manage ethics submissions, modifications and renewals
• Mentor and train research assistants when applicable
• Conducts literature reviews and systematic reviews
• Recruit research participants
• Manage project documentation including protocol development, project planning, evaluation, and reporting
• Assists with research data management
• Coordinate and participate in community and stakeholder engagement sessions
• The individual may also coordinate and engage in research activities that broadly improves the lives of Black people in Canada

This position is located in Calgary, Alberta.

Application to postdoctoral scholarships, such as Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CIHR and SSHRC) will be expected.

Qualifications:

• PhD degree in nutrition, epidemiology, health sciences, or related field
• PhD must have been awarded within the last five years
• Superb knowledge of nutrition among Black people across diverse tribal and sub-ethnic groups
• Advance epidemiological skills
• Experience completing complex multiple regression, latent analysis, etc. using STATA
• Experience working on research projects with Black communities in Canada is preferred
• Experience developing survey tool is desirable
• Track record of journal publications
• Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex quantitative
• In-depth theoretical knowledge of intersectionality theory and/or critical race theory preferred
• Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate student
• Advanced software and database experience required with proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Experience with STATA software is required
• Experience with specific research activities: participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, developing and maintaining ethics applications, writing manuscripts and reports, assisting with grants and funding applications
• Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex research project
• Track record of building positive relationship with Black and racialized communities is required
• Outstanding writing and communication skills
• High level of effective time management, personal initiative, and teamwork
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
• Able to recognize and resolve routine problems in the research process
