Beyond Steam – Additives to Significantly Improve the Emmissions and Energy Intensities of Oil Sands Recovery Processes

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its GRI scientific strategy and to improve hydrocarbon recovery, while reducing emissions and energy intensity, we are looking to fill several positions to investigate the use of novel additives in Oil Sands Recovery Processes.

We seek applications from qualified and motivated young scientists with a passion for clean energy and interdisciplinary research to fill the following positions:

Postdoctoral Fellowship position in interfacial fluid dynamics:

You will work in the area of spatiotemporal visualization of multiphase flows and interfacial fluid dynamics in porous media using integrated microfluidics and confocal microscopy techniques. Applications is related to the subsurface flows and the understanding of underlying physics in enhanced hydrocarbon recovery processes. You are expected to:

  1. Conduct experiments to generate 3D images of fluid-fluid-solid interfaces and nanoparticle fluid interactions in a multiphase flow system.
  2. Develop packages for image analysis besides using open-source and commercial packages such as MATLAB Image J.
  3. Conduct pore scale modeling of process.
  4. Participate in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students working on various aspects of this research theme.
  5. Write research proposals.

We welcome applications from candidates with a background in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum) or related disciplines with a strong interest in laboratory work, experimental and computational fluid dynamics, hands on assembly of pieces to build a set up. A good understanding of chemistry is required. Previous experience in Microfluidic, Microscopy, Scientific Computing, and Image Analysis is highly desirable. Postdoctoral Fellowship position in interfacial phenomena:

We are looking for qualified PhD graduated within 2-4 years. PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science/engineering, petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, physics or biochemistry. Preferred experiences in interfacial and surface science, colloid chemistry, material chemistry, nanomaterials/nanotechnology, micro/nano fabrication, environmental engineering. Each candidate will be required to work within a team environment and so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must.

Postdoctoral positions offer a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year for 2 years, plus benefits, travel and computer allowance, and operating budgets. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting)
