Position Description

The Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenured Professor appointment as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Mechanisms of Concussion.  Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website, including eligibility criteria.  The appointment date for the successful candidate is anticipated to be between January and July 2019.


This is a tenured full professor faculty position in the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Calgary. The CRC Tier 1 will be appointed in accordance with University policies, based on a recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Kinesiology. The CRC Tier 1 funding is for a seven-year, renewable term. Chair candidates will be required to have academic qualifications commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Professor and an internationally distinguished research and teaching record. Candidates must have the necessary credentials to deliver on the mission of the Chair to lead a novel research program at the intersection of leading-edge science in biomechanics and brain pathophysiology in alignment with the priorities of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Integrated Concussion Research Program, and University of Calgary including Eyes High Strategy.


The successful candidate for a Canada Research Chair in Mechanisms of Concussion, will have earned a Doctoral degree in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline. As an accomplished high-profile research leader with an active research program, the Chair will have achieved excellence in their academic career and developed strong leadership skills. The Chair will have the ability and desire to mentor junior faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students in directing the program’s research agenda.  The Chair will be a thought leader for world-class research that is both rigorous and relevant to the advancement of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Schulich School of Engineering, Integrated Concussion Research Program, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), Cumming School of Medicine, and the University of Calgary. Concussion research is a priority program in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and ACHRI.

The successful Chair will address the critical question of how the biomechanical forces that cause concussion are linked to the subsequent pathophysiological processes in the brain (i.e., how biomechanics and biology are linked). Understanding the biomechanical etiology of concussion and its causal link to brain pathophysiology is imperative to improve the prevention and care of concussion and to reduce the global burden of concussion. The CRC will drive a novel research program at the intersection of cutting-edge science in biomechanics and brain pathophysiology. An integrative and interdisciplinary research program that links biomechanics (e.g., remote sensors, finite element modeling, tissue mechanics, body segment dynamics), brain pathophysiology, and clinical outcomes (e.g., symptoms, vestibular function, cognitive performance, motor control, mental health) is a priority to inform the development of clinical diagnostic and prognostic tools and to improve the prevention and treatment of concussion.

This position includes several key areas of responsibility:

  • To ensure the continuation of research excellence in mechanisms of concussion
  • To expand the international excellence of graduate and post graduate training programs in concussion in the Faculty of Kinesiology and the University of Calgary
  • To provide strategic leadership to research and research training within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Integrated Concussion Research Program
  • To provide visionary leadership with a demonstrated ability to lead a complex, multi-disciplinary team and to foster and encourage high level research productivity and infrastructure development
  • To attract and engage new and existing partners in human and/or animal model biomechanics by working collaboratively across campuses, faculties, institutes and the community
  • To advocate and be an effective spokesperson for the Faculty of Kinesiology and the Integrated Concussion Research Program with an ability to effectively communicate with and lead researchers from different Faculties (Schulich School of Engineering, Cumming School of Medicine, and the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Arts, Nursing, and Science)

Chair Profile:

  • Doctorate in Biomechanics or Biomedical Engineering, with substantial background in Human Biomechanics and/or Biomedical Engineering related to concussion and/or trauma
  • Outstanding research and academic achievements and a funding track-record commensurate with Full Professor; recognized by scholarly awards and ongoing external grant funding
  • Research interests and accomplishments aligned with current human biomechanical and concussion priorities and strength at the University of Calgary; demonstrated by publications, peer reviews, and international conferences
  • Strong research portfolio, with a proven track-record of peer reviewed funding, that evidences multidisciplinary expertise, and that can complement and expand existing Biomechanics, Concussion, Injury Prevention, Sport Medicine, and Rehabilitation strengths in the Faculty of Kinesiology and the Integrated Concussion Research Program
  • Evidence of substantial leadership ability and experience in an interdisciplinary (multi-faculty) academic environment that includes mentoring students and faculty, facilitation of team initiatives, past chair or dean positions, leading international collaborative teams
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting growth and development of faculty, staff and students, mentorship of early career researchers, and creation of new courses and programs
  • Exceptional communicator, with a commitment to engagement with multiple stakeholders from the university, community, government and industry
  • Responsive on short notice to high priority issues and challenges in a decisive, pragmatic, strategic, and politically astute manner
