Position Overview

The Department of Caretaking Programs in Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator.

Reporting to the Manager, Caretaking Programs, the Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator will oversee all aspects of the recycling and solid waste activities. This position provides contract management, reporting, supervision, and recycling education and training associated with the recycling and solid waste programs.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Planning, preparing, implementing and supervising recycling, organics and solid waste activities and programs
  • Delivering presentations to local groups including University staff in reference to the operations and procedures of the various collection programs on campus
  • Coordinates tours of the recycling, organics and solid waste operations
  • Preparing written reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations pertaining to current and future recycling and solid waste management
  • Managing current and future contracts pertaining to waste and recycling and source reduction
  • Reviewing technical documents for recommendations and enforcement
  • Investigating and analying accidents and incidents with a view to avoiding injuries, damage, and overall associated costs
  • Monitoring and analyzing technical training costs and associated benefits
  • Monitoring current and future contracts pertaining to recycling, solid waste, source reduction and other departmental operational programs
  • Providing input and recommendations for renewal of contracted services
  • Material handling including ordering, inventory, and restocking of equipment and supplies
  • Developing and managing annual budgets as required
  • Visually inspecting recycling and solid waste collection sites to collect and analyze information to recommend changes and improvements
  • Preparing RFP’s and contracts
  • Assisting the supervisor in the planning, scheduling, and implementing of construction, operation, and maintenance activities
  • Assisting in the procurement of supplies and services in accordance with established guidelines and policies
  • Monitoring the performance of hired contractors in accordance with specifications and standards
  • Completing work requests and initiate appropriate action in consultation with the manager and supervisor
  • Attending meetings on behalf of the manager or supervisor as required or during his/her absence
  • Approving purchases and invoices to the level of signing authority assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must have a solid background in recycling and solid waste operations
  • Degree or diploma in environmental science or related field
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant municipal public works experience in the areas of recycling and solid waste
  • Proven ability to be a leader, mentor, and motivator for staff and contractors
  • Must have an aptitude for working with contractors, multiple stakeholders and associated contracts
  • Must be able to take direction, possess good verbal, organization, written and presentation skills
  • Must be able to follow established procedures and take responsibility for completing assigned tasks on time
  • Must have strong negotiation skills and experience in handling difficult and time sensitive issues
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to solve problems, and be able to analyze data and information, formulating and documenting plans
  • Must have intermediate level computer knowledge and be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, excel, outlook, power point and other software
  • Be able to use the Archibus Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • Must be adept at mobile communication devices, such as iPhone/iPad, etc
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and specifications
  • Must have a proven record of learning and upgrading technical skills and leadership skills
  • Proven track record of providing excellent customer service and superior organizational skills
  • Ability to interact with tact and courtesy in discussing information and dealing with the general public
  • A valid class 5 (non GDL) Alberta Operator’s License is required with less than 7 demerit points
  • A valid first-aid certificate would be an asset
