Position Overview

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant - Ocean Acidification Community of Practice Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Assistant will support the activities of the Canadian Ocean Acidification Community of Practice, a MEOPAR initiative led by Dr. Brent Else (Department of Geography) and Dr. Helen Gurney-Smith (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, St. Andrews Biological Station in New Brunswick). 



Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Build a membership list for the Community of Practice by identifying, contacting, and inviting ocean acidification researchers and data users from government, academia, industry and non-profit groups
  • Develop an online communication platform (e.g. forum) and website to advertise and coordinate the activities of the CoP
  • Gather information from the Community to build a catalogue of ongoing ocean acidification research and physical infrastructure in Canada
  • Assist with the development of data sharing networks and interoperability standards to ensure accessibility of ocean acidification data for researchers and stakeholders
  • Facilitate the development of "best practices" documents for experiments, sample collection, and sensor development
  • Organize and host webinars on topics of interest to the Community of Practice
  • Organize national and regional Ocean Acidification workshops
  • Ensure that work assigned is completed within acceptable time frames and as required to professional research standards, meeting all University standards and processes
  • Respectfully interact with co-workers, members of the University community, members of the public and outside agencies/organizations

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in marine science, including social science
  • Have research experience in a field related to ocean acidification, and already have some connections to the Canadian ocean acidification research community
  • Require strong organizational and communication skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently
  • Experience with data management, research outreach, and/or website development would be an asset
