Data Coordinator, Family Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Data Coordinator. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the strong possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Academic Department Head, and supervised by the Project Lead, the Data Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of data management and utilization of metrics supporting quality improvement and service evaluation within the Department of Family Medicine (DFM). This includes assisting in the planning, design, implementation, mining, and integration of metrics to support the department's evaluation strategy, quality improvement and assurance initiatives, research pursuits, and activities in innovation.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to assist in the development of other similar departmental web initiatives; including, but not limited to, the development of a secure departmental information hub and supplemental support of various other technical initiatives as required by the Academic Department Head.

This position will be based out of the DFM, Sheldon Chumir site, travel to other Family Medicine sites within Calgary will be required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Academic Patient Medical Home Informatics Support (50%):
    • Supports internal stakeholders with the design, development, analysis, and delivery of reporting requirements to aide in service planning and decision making to advance the Academic Patient Medical Home
    • Establishes and maintains strong stakeholder relationships including but not limited to the Quality and Informatics team, DFM Education program, DFM Research Hub, DFM Finance team
    • Participates and shares processes and systems improvement methods, which includes advancements in technical tools for data processing, analysis, and communication of departmental informatics
    • Supports reporting and metric provision for accountability purposes and to enhance evidence based decision making
  • Digital Innovation Support (30%):
    • Provide technical assistance and support during the development process of digital departmental deliverables
    • Willingness to learn new as well as existing industry standard development techniques as they arise with respect to web and database development methodologies and their applications to departmental initiatives
    • Familiarization with supporting intellectual projects from conception to reality by following the industry standard design processes and methodologies in a goal oriented environment
  • Performs other duties as required (20%):
    • Participation in role related meetings
    • Provide orientation, guidance, and educational support to new Quality and Informatics team members, and other personnel as appropriate

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor level education is required with a strong data management component in a related field such as Computer Science, Health Science, Social Science, Biomedical Statistics. 
  • Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) and the ability to become proficient in new software development and management tools is required
  • Demonstrated experience in recognized data management systems and languages including PHP, SQL,  HTML, Javascript, Microsoft Access, Filemaker, is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience statistical software STATA, SPSS, SAS considered an asset.
  • Minimum five years of experience working in spreadsheets, databases, and developing tools for querying, integrating, analyzing, reporting and disseminating data is required
  • Minimum three years of experience in the application of information technology and information management is required
  • Previous experience in a health care setting is preferred
  • Experience in gathering information for and documenting project requirements is preferred
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures required
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate change
  • Ability to think critically, problem solve complex issues and prioritize effectively
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in a team and various stakeholder groups
