Position Overview

The Faculty of Nursing is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Learning and Instructional Design Specialist¿ for approximately 1 year.

The Learning and Instructional Design Specialist reports directly to the Director, Graduate Professional Programs. The position will support the development, design and implementation of the Faculty of Nursing graduate professional programs curriculum ensuring all online courses are developed, delivered and evaluated using the best instructional technologies and tools. This position requires an experienced and dynamic person with proven, applied experience in online and blended course design, implementation and evaluation.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

¿ Developing, implementing and assessing programs, resources and initiatives to build capacity and support research-informed learning, instructional and course design practices and approaches (50%)

  • Facilitate linkages and collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing and the greater University of Calgary community engaged in online/blended teaching including IT and the Taylor Institute for Teaching & Learning
  • Build, establish and maintain an online/blended teaching and learning culture and a sense of community fostering a high level of engagement between faculty teaching in the graduate professional programs
  • Design, develop, and facilitate specific workshops, seminars and operational training on current online teaching skills and tools, curriculum design, course design, and module design
  • Provide training, guidance, coaching, and individual support to faculty in the design and delivery of courses using emerging technologies, tools and platforms including Desire2Learn, Adobe Presenter, Adobe Connect, ePortfolios, Quiz tools, etc. staying abreast of new high-quality digital technologies that would enhance the faculty's online programs
  • Assist in the evaluation of courses to help ensure program learning outcomes are being met and that the quality of the program is of the highest caliber. Evaluate the impact and success of learning and instructional design initiatives, programs and approaches, with a focus on continuous improvement, implementing quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies

Design, plan, develop, launch, and maintain blended/online courses and modules and provide technical support and coaching to faculty teaching in the Graduate Professional Programs (50%)

  • Work in a highly collaborative fashion with faculty leading the development of detailed project work plans for each course and specialization bundles ensuring consistency, quality and the timely delivery of deliverables
  • Provide technical and instructional design support to faculty teaching in the program ensuring faculty needs are met. Technology supports may be needed outside or regular and are particularly critical during course development and at the beginning of each semester while instructor/student technical capacity is developed
  • Designs, develops, launches and maintains various e-learning objects, modules (video and audio) and courses ensuring a high-quality student experience from registration to program completion
  • Act as the subject-matter experts to (re)design, and develop course and certificate curriculum, ensuring lesson, course, certificate, and program learning outcomes are consistently and expertly mapped
  • Play both lead and supporting roles to develop and maintain necessary learning resources, including web and media resources, and technical publications for the faculty development section of the Faculty's teaching and learning website
  • Actively establish working relationships with faculty and sessional instructors in various locations (some remote) involved in online teaching
  • Encourage and foster faculty interest in instructional design principles and tools including D2L, Adobe Connect, Adobe Presenter, course design and other programs and systems

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education, Instructional Design, e-Learning Technologies, Educational Technologies, Curriculum Design, or equivalent training in a related discipline
  • 2 or more years of instructional design experience in higher education using online/blended teaching and technologies, web-based training and instructional design is required with at least 2 years´ this experience at the post-secondary level
  • In depth knowledge of instructional design and technologies, curriculum and course development methods and research, and pedagogical practices in online teaching and learning
  • Proven collaborative strategic planning skills in innovative online education practices
  • Excellent, demonstrable knowledge of interface design, web-based resources, multi-media technologies, and learning management systems (i.e. D2L and Adobe Connect)
  • Experience with Windows and Mac operating systems and Internet applications in a networked environment
  • Experience in project management, project management and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts to faculty members and students to build their understanding and confidence in e-learning technology
  • Evidence of passion for staying current on new developments within the fields of educational technology, online and blended learning, to respond to the changing curriculum development needs within the Faculty of Nursing's online courses and certificates
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to establish, maintain and grow effective collegial relationships in a post-secondary environment
  • Proven ability to work independently but also in a highly collaborative fashion with individuals across the organization
