Position Overview

The University of Calgary is pleased to be a CPA pre-approved training office.The Department of Finance is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term CPA Articling Accountant for approximately 3 years.

Over a three year period, the CPA Articling Student will rotate in six to twelve month intervals through Internal Audit and Internal & External Financial Reporting. In each of the rotational areas the student will report to a designated Supervisor in addition to their CPA Mentor and Program Leader, the AVP Finance. The student will be responsible for interpreting and applying generally accepted accounting principles, audit procedures or other regulations. The work will be varied with strict deadlines and constantly changing priorities requiring the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. The nature of the work will result in the student being privy to confidential information requiring a high degree of confidentiality. The student will participate in the development of reports and presentations that will assist Senior Management, Executives and the Board in institutional financial decision making.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Over the three year term the CPA Student will complete their practical experience requirements to obtain the CPA designation developing competencies in:

  • Financial Reporting
  • Audit & Assurance
  • Management Accounting

The student must maintain a Practical Experience Reporting Tool over the term of the position and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Preparation of various external and internal financial reports 
  • Develop reports and presentations to assist in executive management and Board decision making 
  • Review consolidated and business unit operational variances to budget to derive and document overall variance explanations 
  • Develop forecasts for the various stages of the strategic financial planning process 
  • As part of the internal audit team the student will plan, execute and report on audit engagements ensuring efficient execution and compliance with applicable standards

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Recent completion of a relevant University degree 
  • Eligibility to enroll in the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with an attention to detail are required 
  • Requires an entry level understanding of financial reporting, internal audit and financial processes 
  • The student must have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office is required 
  • Exposure to large enterprise resource planning systems and data warehousing would be beneficial
