Position Overview

Financial Reporting Operations Team is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Junior IT Project Accountant. 

Information Technologies (IT) has the mandate to provide computing and network services to support the teaching, research and administration needs of the University of Calgary by delivering technology solutions through effective, sustainable and responsible planning and design.

The Junior Project Accountant is an entry level role that reports to the Manager, IT Reporting, and is a key part of the financial management team involved in implementing the university's technology plan.  This position is part of a project team which may include a Project Accountant, Project Manager and Project Administrator, and is accountable for all financial elements of the assigned projects or programs of projects.

The volume and complexity of work, stressors and impact of error are high. The position requires the ability to assess and solve problems, and maintain good judgment in stressful situations.  The incumbent must work well within a team, and must balance multiple priorities, think while ensuring broad service support for assigned project(s). 

This position normally works Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week, however, overtime may be required on occasion.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Establish and maintain effective working and communication relationships with the project team and departments worked with (Project Manager, Accounts Payable, Project Management Office, Procurement, Manager, IT Reporting, Financial Services & other Project Accountants)
  • Prepare purchase orders and invoices for processing
  • Prepare and submit necessary journal entries, including monthly accruals, in accordance with the University's policies and procedures
  • Prepare necessary project set up information
  • Apply the University's Capitalization Policy and ensuring internal controls are respected
  • Prepare, reconcile and monitor IT reporting for specified projects
  • Ensure that financial and management reporting follows established University policies and processes, as well as established and accepted accounting practices, in all financial matters
  • Prepare the financial and management reports as required by the project team
  • Meet all ongoing OHS initiatives, follow University OHS policies and procedures and OHS Legislation as required; ensure personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations
  • Become familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducting themselves according to these principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary
  • Continuation of requirements toward obtaining accounting designation
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a post-secondary accounting certificate or degree from a recognized institution
  • Working towards an accounting designation
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word and Excel is essential
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft would be an asset
  • Willing to undertake training in accounting and systems as required
  • Strong understanding of information systems and processes
  • Be organized, able to handle a large and varied workload, and meet deadlines
  • Prepare accurate and timely requisitions and reports
  • Work well with others, and handle difficult and stressful situations while maintaining effective relationships
  • Think logically, solve problems and be critically objective with an ability to develop innovative solutions to problems
  • Work well independently or in a team environment
