Position Overview

The Downtown Urban Campus is currently seeking a Full-time Regular General Maintenance and Facilities Worker.

The full-time General Maintenance and Facilities Worker ensures that the event spaces and classroom furniture are set up according to the needs of each user group and that the physical campus infrastructure is maintained to the standards expected of a Class A building. While this is a hands-on role, there are aspects to the position which require the incumbent to adopt a proactive planning approach and to work effectively with stakeholders. The incumbent will work closely with downtown campus event planning and information technology staff.

This position reports to the Director with the work performed under minimal supervision.  Daily tasks and work assignments are received from the Team Lead, Facilities and Client Services.  This position is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. 

The intended hours of work are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break. Depending on the needs of the campus, these hours may be adjusted from time to time.  Occasional weekend work may be required. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on standby.  Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies to assist building operations as needed. Therefore, it is important that the incumbent have flexibility to adjust shifts as needed.

This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, heavy lifting, year round indoor responsibilities, and limited outdoor responsibilities.   

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

There are three primary purposes of this position:

a) to perform the day-to-day maintenance, painting, and repairs required for a public, mixed use student/rental facility, and

b) to set up and dismantle tables, chairs, staging and podiums for special events and classrooms

c) in the absence of the IT Analyst, to ensure classroom computer and projection equipment is turned on prior to the start of each class and to assist instructors with basic troubleshoot

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate general maintenance, upkeep and repairs of the facility by developing an annual maintenance plan; identifying equipment needed, estimating annual maintenance costs, and scheduling regular and recurring tasks according to available time and seasonality
  • Set Up and Tear Down Event Centre and multi-purpose rooms
  • Monitor and assist with all activities and management of the loading dock and servery
  • Maintain and Organize campus storage areas
  • Manage public common area spaces
  • Organize and maintain campus storage areas including storage room and basement
  • Ensure classrooms, meeting rooms, and event centres are well maintained and clean
  • General Maintenance and Repair
  • General campus cleaning : for tasks not covered by cleaning contractor or to augment staff

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Physical strength and stamina and be able to lift up heavy (up to 25 kilograms)
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, as well as be able to work in cramped positions
  • Excellent customer service skills including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Comfortable working with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with co-workers
  • The ability to work flexible hours (evening and weekends as required), in a fast-paced, team- oriented yet self-directed work environment
  • Knowledge of basic technology operation including turning on classroom computers and projectors; troubleshooting screen operation; and helping instructors get setup for class start
  • Knowledge of basic facility maintenance such as drywall mudding, taping, sanding, and painting techniques
  • Basic knowledge of the use of small hand tools, construction fundamentals, furniture and lock repair
  • Knowledge of handling small tools and ability to undertake minor repairs in a commercial building
  • The incumbent must be fluent in both written and verbal English
  • Must have a pleasant, customer-service oriented demeanor
  • Attention to personal hygiene - Must present a neat and clean physical appearance as this involves working around campus students, staff and clients
