Position Overview

The Animal Resource Centre in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Temporary Relief Senior Animal Care Technician for approximately 13 months.

Reports to the Operations Manager, Animal Resources Centre, Cumming School of Medicine and takes daily instructions from The Clara Christie Centre for Mouse Genomics (CCCMG) Supervisor.

The primary purpose of the Senior Animal Care Technician role is to provide support and leadership to staff members of the Clara Christie Centre for Mouse Genomics including ensuring constant follow through with proper procedures and policies, providing mentorship and supervision, education and training to staff as well as maintenance of facility equipment, standard operating procedures and monitoring systems.

Carry out duties independently, with minimal supervision.  Work may require exposure to hazardous material or situations.

Requires moderate to heavy physical tasks.  May be at risk for developing allergies from animals, latex, or other substances.  Shifts may require weekend work and on call.  May be required to work in other units within the Animal Resource Centre.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Animal Care and Husbandry:
    • Provide animal care and husbandry which may include: watering and feeding animals and changing cages following strict safety guidelines for prevention of exposure of disease, monitoring and assessing general animal health, reporting problems to Facility Veterinarian, providing basic treatment under direction of the Facility Veterinarian as required, setting up breeding colonies supported by recordkeeping, liaising with researchers and suppliers regarding breeding information and training, performing skilled technical procedures such as blood sampling, injections, euthanasia, breeding, and other techniques or procedures as requested by researchers
    • Induction, maintenance and monitoring of animals under anesthesia
    • Provides custodial duties to maintain facility sanitation procedures
    • Ensure positive relationships are developed with researchers and the ARC staff
    • Ensures at all times that work complies with animal, facility and good laboratory standards
    • Detailed record keeping is required for a variety of tasks
    • Works with chemicals and medications safely and properly, e.g. dilutions, using appropriately marked containers and using protective gear
    • Keeps supervisor informed of activities and seeks problem solving assistance where required, as well as bringing forward suggestions for more efficient operation of the unit
    • Work with a high degree of autonomy
    • Possess knowledge of sterilization and decontamination processes
    • Must have knowledge of quarantine operation and biocontainment
  • Orientations, Development and Delivery of Training (Staff and Users):
    • Provide instruction, education and mentoring to researchers, research technicians, research trainees and ARC staff members in the Clara Christie Centre for Mouse Genomics
  • Monitoring and Maintenance of all CMG Equipment, Vivatracks, Edstrom Autowater:
    • Ensure safe operation of equipment in the area such as laminar flow change stations, ventilated caging systems, autoclave and anesthetic delivery systems, as well as assess needs for and evaluation of new equipment
  • Acting Supervisor:
    • Act as a resource and provide technical assistance to researchers, HSARC management and staff members of the Clara Christie Centre for Mouse Genomics, ensuring proper technical and safety procedures are followed at all times and that staff and users have the required information before working in this area
    • Provide supervision and leadership of the Clara Christie Centre for Mouse Genomics in absence of Unit Supervisor
    • Meet regularly with CMG Supervisor and Manager to assess, develop and implement new methods and processes
  • Generation and submission of Counts/Billables/Food Log:
    • Responsible for creation and monthly submission of CCCMG counts and billables
    • Responsible for creation, maintenance and submission of CCCMG monthly food log
  • SOP Development and Maintenance:
    • Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures are current and up-to-date
    • Proficient use of IRISS to access pertinent information about protocol activities occurring within the HSARC
    • Responsible for own professional and personal development through seminars, courses and upgrading of skills
    • Monitor protocol adherence and compliance, address infractions, working closely with Veterinarian and Manager towards a proper resolution

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Diploma as an AHT and/or BSc degree in related field or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4-5 years experience in an institutional animal care facility
  • Requires high degree of analytical skills in carrying out technical procedures with a high impact of error
  • Requires advanced knowledge of multiple complex operation procedures and policies pertaining to guidelines set by the Department, the Faculty, the University and the CCAC
  • In-depth knowledge of theory, procedures and skills in areas of specialized husbandry and complex technical procedures
  • Proficient verbal communication and writing skills
  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English
  • Excellent record keeping skills with attention to detail
  • Solid working knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and sterilization equipment
  • Demonstrated experience in design and writing of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Desirable qualifications are certification as a RLAT or RMLAT
  • Advanced knowledge of CCAC guidelines, University and Departmental policies & procedures and Health Canada Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines required
  • Comprehensive understanding in principles of sanitation, disinfection and sterilization, disease control and health monitoring
  • Good computer skills in a Word environment and internet skills
