Clinical Research Coordinator, Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Position Title. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principle Investigator.  

The Patient-centred Radiation Oncology Service Enhancement initiative (PROSE) is aimed to enhance person-centered care measurable by appropriate patient reported experience measures, including but not limited to information, emotional support and care coordination domains.  It is hoped that improvements in practice culture through enhancing person-centred care within the radiation treatment portion of cancer services will have a positive impact on patient experience.  In patient care terms, one of the motivating factors of the PROSE initiative is to lessen the burden of the "emotional roller coaster ride" or the sense of "going through the chop shop", or, in other words, to alleviate stressful and distressing experiences during intense periods of transitioning through cancer diagnosis, progression and the associated therapeutic interventions, where radiation therapy is a significant component.

 A Clinical Research Coordinator is a professional that functions to operationalize and coordinate established protocols and combining overlapping projects. A Research Coordinator is required to follow U of C ethics and internal protocols to ensure that research goals are met.  

This position will require occasional national and international travel.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Initially: 
    • Responsible for literature reviews and literature summaries
    • Drafting of all documents related to the development of the program and its governance
    • Organize and schedule team meetings
    • Coordinate with ethics (REB)
  • As the research program develops this incumbent would help run a call for proposals and organize the review of the proposals
  • Once we have our initial batch of QI projects are selected, the incumbent would provide support to launch those project (e.g. REB, recruitment)
  • Meet the continuously changing needs of the department and the University
  • Maintain established programs and procedures
  • Provide clients with information and advice about programs/services
  • Ensure that services meet the continuously changing needs of the department and the University
  • Make recommendations to policy or procedural changes as needed
  • Maintain established programs and procedures
  • Recruit eligible subjects for research projects by checking charts and other sources
  • Coordinate and schedule research visits according to study procedures
  • Abstract data from existing databases
  • Collaborate with the study investigators to perform and complete relevant parts of the study, such as obtaining signatures, discussing questions that come up, reviewing abnormal results of tests, etc.
  • Perform physician delegated functions, such as interviewing and educating patients, completing questionnaires, etc.
  • Develop informed consent forms, source documents worksheets and case report forms
  • Contribute to protocol development by bringing forth feasible ideas for patient recruitment, study design and methodology and patient retention in studies.
  • Liaise with all research team members and sponsor/other collaborators
  • Prepare and submit study documents to the ethic boards
  • Maintain research study binders with regulatory documents and patient data

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc trained (PhD preferred) individual with training or experience in: epidemiology/health services research, qualitative methods, Quality of life work, and / or quality improvement work.
  • 2-5 years of experience in a research environment
  • Knowledge of University policies including submission of projects to ethics boards
  • Understanding of the University of Calgary Business Systems an asset
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects
  • Fluent in English; excellent communication skills
  • Computer literacy MS Windows, Word, Excel, MS Outlook and MS Access
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Must be able to work independently and with others
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Cooperative and dependable
  • Effective multi-tasking skills
