Position Overview

Are you interested in applying your molecular biology laboratory expertise to help tackle  globally important human and animal health problems?

We are looking for a Research Associate/Technician position to provide technical laboratory support to the molecular parasitology and genomics research programs of Dr John Gilleard and Dr James Wasmuth in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The Department of Comparative Biology & Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate reports to and receives direction from the Principal Investigators (P.I.s). This position exists to perform, analyze and validate laboratory experiments for the P.I.s and to support lab members in performing laboratory experiments in the areas of molecular biology and genetics of parasitic nematodes of man and animals. The Research Associate will work with supervision from the Principal Investigators and with other laboratory users in order to ensure the success of the research activities. This position is located at Foothills Campus.

The Research Associate will provide technical support in the laboratory and undertake research experiments under the guidance of the P.Is  The Research Associate will be involved in and/or responsible for various research projects and he/she will be expected to acquire the necessary technical skills in a way that he/she can train other lab members in this. He/she will perform experimental tests and help analyze and interpret results. The Research Associate will communicate results with group members, members of collaborating groups at campus and extramural. He/she will assist graduate/undergraduate students, new research scientists and visiting scientists in specific techniques and bioinformatics analyses. He/she will participate in design of new/modified research methods and participate in paper, review, research report and grant proposal writing, if needed. Presentation of data at the regular lab meetings and journal clubs, institutional meetings, and national and international scientific meetings is needed. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Carries out research activities in the areas of parasitic nematode genetics, drug discovery and drug resistance research outlined by the Principal Investigators.
  • Provides technical assistance to other laboratory personnel as needed.
  • Works within established University research guidelines and research specific protocols.
  • Presents specialized, technical information, or research results to the research team and collaborators.
  • Maintains confidentiality, adheres to safety regulations, and is flexible in providing assistance in other areas as required.
  • Fosters a positive and productive work environment.
  • Is familiar with the University of Calgary statement on Principles of Conduct and conducts themselves according to these principles in all situations when representing UCVM or while acting on behalf of the University.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with all facility users through skillful communication.
  • Interacts with facility users (faculty, students, staff, and others) in a pleasant and respectful manner when providing assistance.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor in biology, genetics, microbiology or health sciences is required with a Masters or PhD degree being an asset.
  • Advanced education, and a good working knowledge of molecular biology and cell biology is essential. An experimental background in next-generation sequencing approaches is also an asset but training can be supplied as necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with hazardous chemicals and infectious agents is required.
  • Possessing WHMIS and bio-safety level 1 & 2 training an asset; if not possessed, training will be provided.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel Suite.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate interaction with a variety of facilities users is needed (fluency in English is necessary) as well as the ability to work under indirect supervision.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills, strong organizational, and excellent interpersonal skills.
