Position Overview

Staff Wellness Centre is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Advisor, Ability Management for approximately 1 year.

Staff Wellness aims to promote, support and sustain the health and wellness of faculty and staff at the University of Calgary so they can perform at their best. This is accomplished by promoting practices to safeguard and optimize health, supporting employees, maximizing function and aiding in recovery from occupational and non-occupational illness or injury.
As a member of the Staff Wellness team, this position reports to the Manager and is part of the Risk portfolio. The Ability Management Advisor role is responsible for proactively managing the various absence and disability related occupational and non-occupational programs and claims associated with different staff groups across the University.





Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Claims Management

  • Determine the eligibility and duration of benefits based on medical evidence
  • Interpret and apply medical information, work restrictions, and accommodation hierarchy
  • Ensure a smooth transition to LTD and manage the University's interests in the LTD claim
  • Ensure WCB claims are moving forward, costs on the claims are appropriate, and coordinate return to work
  • Provide direction and facilitation (if required) for further assessment on claims (sick, LTD, or WCB), including arranging referrals, independent medicals and functional capacity exams, etc.
  • Coordinate and manage individual accommodation and return to work plans including regular contact with stakeholders and proactively addressing barriers
  • Provide support in addressing and resolving issues that might be affecting a staff member's ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Act as a University representative during an appeal or grievance process defending decisions related to claims management
  • Ensure medical information is being handled appropriately and is kept confidential in accordance with privacy legislation

Client Relations

  • Provide expert advice, consultation, education, and support to the Human Resources team, managers and staff in the areas of sick leave, disability management, payment of program benefits, accommodation and cost containment
  • Foster and maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders (Staff Wellness team, Human Resources, external service providers and insurers, Department Heads, Managers, Supervisors, unions, medical providers, staff, etc.)
  • Hold regular meetings with client areas to keep them apprised of claim status (sick, LTD, and WCB) and provide guidance on health and disability related issues
  • Refer managers and staff to other appropriate internal or external services (i.e. EFAP, ergonomics, medical providers, insurance carriers) and act as a liaison to these services as required
  • Coordinate with the Environmental Health & Safety department when dealing with Workers Compensation Claims
  • Facilitate training and informational sessions on absence and disability related practices

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in health/social sciences or other relevant education related to disability management or vocational rehabilitation
  • Professional designation (e.g. CRTWC, CDMP) or eligible to apply
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in claims adjudication, case management, vocational rehabilitation, including demonstrated understanding of group benefit plans and administrative processes relating to case management
  • Experience in a unionized environment or public sector environment is an asset
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to negotiate difficult situations and to build positive relationships with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders
  • Ability to influence others towards positive outcomes and ensure progress on initiatives
  • Experience in facilitating presentations and delivering training is an asset
  • Experience working with Cority (Medgate) is an asset
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
