Biomechanics Technician, Human Performance Lab, Faculty of Kinesiology

Position Overview

The Human Performance Lab (HPL) withing the Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for a Biomechanics Technician. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Human Performance Lab (HPL) is located in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. The areas of research within the lab vary from nutrition, muscular/skeletal functioning, High Performance sport training, injury recovery and prevention, as well as improving quality of life for those with debilitating diseases. As a research facility staff and clients may be exposed to bio and chemical hazards.

This posiiton reports to the Principal Investigator and will focus on research related to athletic equipment including footwear and apparel.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Organize testing sessions with coaches/athletes/participants to complete high-performance sport related testing
  • Lead data collection sessions that may consist of the use of the 3D Motion Analysis System, pressure measurement system, timing lights, mechanical testing machines, etc.
  • Keep all records of raw and processed data for reporting purposes
  • Design systems related to athletic equipment and performance
  • Test prototypes to assess changes in behavior or performance
  • Participate in the interpretation and synthesis of results into pertinent conclusions and recommendations based on the research study and/or client specifications
  • Assist in effectively presenting results and conclusions in writing and orally

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or Kinesiology; MSc is an asset
  • Experience with all aspects of scientific research
  • High level of effective organizational, time and personal initiative skills, teamwork, accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Strong skills with Matlab and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of motion capture and pressure measurement systems is an asset
  • Experience writing scientific manuscripts and technical reports
