HR Advisor - Academic, HR Services, Human Resources

Position Overview

HR Services within Human Resoures is currently seeking a Full-time Regular HR Advisor - Academic.

This position reports to the Manager, HR Services Academic, and will provide consistent and accurate advice within the guidelines of the University, the Collective Agreements (TUCFA, GSA), policies and procedures (APT, GPC, postdoc policy) and legislation (Post-Secondary Learning Act), in order to understand and work within human resources processes, priorities and strategie, and reduce risk associated with potential grievances, complaints or other disputes.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensure compliance and appropriate implementation of the Collective Agreement(s) (Academic) and the various University academic policies, procedures and programs
  • Provides advice on the spectrum of recruitment and selection matters related to continuing academic staff
  • Manages the procedures for the appointment of sessional instructors, clinicals and adjuncts; oversees the performance management process for the Faculty(s)/Unit(s) for such appointments
  • Investigates, analyzes and prepares briefing documents on issues and concerns that may affect the Faculties/Units. Anticipates the need for information and conducts background research
  • Manages the tenure, promotion, transfer between ranks and assessment procedures in accordance with the Collective Agreement and the APT Manual; provides expert support to the Deans, Associate Deans and Department Heads regarding their roles; works collaboratively with the Academic Relations, Total Rewards, and talent management teams
  • Manages the compensation processes and practices within the Faculty(s)/Unit(s) for academic staff,  including but not limited to salary anomalies, market supplements, Provost's salary adjustment fund, administrative honoraria, research supplements, as well as step and grid placement for sessional instructors
  • Manages the process for the research and scholarship leave, special leaves, administrative leaves for Faculty(s)/ Unit(s); works collaboratively with the HR Operations (Academic) team

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in a Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
  • 3 years of experience in a human resources advisory role; or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Good knowledge of human resources principles, legislation and programs and collective agreements
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset
  • CPHR designation is an asset
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrates solid judgment and professionalism
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationship and collaborate with internal and external clients
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required, with the ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines
  • Proven work ethic with a focus on maintaining confidentiality and attention to detail
  • Strong proficiency with Word, Excel, PeopleSoft or other HRIS
