Manager, Accounts Receivable, Finance

Position Overview

Finance is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager, Accounts Receivable.

The Accounts Receivable department at UCalgary manages external billings, deposit controls, and collections. The unit also advises, supports, and trains university departments and external parties in these areas.

The Manager, Accounts Receivable, reports to the Director, Financial Operations and is the owner of the processes for Accounts Receivable and Student Receivables.   The incumbent performs work that requires complex problem solving skills, strong analytical abilities, extensive organizational knowledge, sound judgment and expertise in technical financial concepts. The incumbent must manage multiple and competing deadlines throughout the year, including month-end, year-end, student fee deadlines and federal government tax reporting deadlines. Working in partnership with faculties, departments and other stakeholders is required to ensure that funds received are accounted for in accordance with University policies.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Contributes information and expertise and keeps up to date on relevant trends, systems and developments with colleagues at other Canadian universities and relevant professional organizations
  • Contributes to and takes responsibility for decisions made as part of the management team within Financial Operations
  • Selects, manages, and evaluates Accounts Receivable staff to ensure the unit functions as a team
  • Creates an environment where knowledge sharing, support, training tools, coaching and staff development ensure service levels meet or exceed client expectations
  • Evaluates the reporting, business processes, metrics, audit, and control functions of the unit and recommends changes, seeks approval and implements changes
  • Change agent for unit; initiates and implements the appropriate accounts receivable policies, systems, processes and procedures
  • Develops processes to streamline the deposit and billing functions to meet university requirements while implementing best practices. Coordinates activities to ensure effective integration with other administrative work units
  • Liaison with departments, faculties and senior administration to ensure understanding of and compliance with accounts receivable policies and procedures
  • Undertakes special assignments and projects as requested by senior administration
  • Work with internal units that perform billing/deposit functions to ensure they are following University policies
  • Preparation of annual tax slips for University students

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) with a related university degree
  • Ten or more years of experience in various accounting functions
  • Five or more years of experience in Accounts Receivable management in a large organization would be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for e-commerce and e-business systems
  • Experience in identifying and implementing business process change including change management skills
  • Experience with PeopleSoft  Accounts Receivable/Student Finance modules would be an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated team leadership, facilitation and negotiation skills
