The Life Sciences Innovation Hub (LSI Hub) at the University of Calgary is a one-of-a-kind facility located within University Research Park. The LSI Hub will offer access to space (office, wet and dry labs, prototype maker space), entrepreneurial and business development programming, mentorship, and technical expertise for research-intensive startups and developing companies.

The 127,000 square foot facility will be operated by Innovate Calgary on behalf of the University of Calgary and its partners. This new initiative has created a number of exciting employment opportunities for talented individuals in the areas of Life Sciences and Engineering laboratory management, building and facilities management, startup support and office support.

We are currently accepting applications for the following position:

 

LIFE SCIENCES TEAM LEAD AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

The Manager will manage the laboratory staff and will work closely with an extended team of over 40 individuals, including Business Analysts, Marketing Specialists, Attorneys, and Intellectual Property Technology Managers. Reporting to and supporting the Manager, will be two lab managers and two technologists whose roles will be to provide services, guidance and project/process assistance to tenants of the LSI Hub facility.

The Manager and team will engage entrepreneurial tenants on behalf of the LSI Hub, and will work closely with the many life science and engineering researchers in the University of Calgary; in particular with individuals and groups in the Cummings School of Medicine, the Schulich School of Engineering and the faculties of Science. The Manager is responsible for the management of the shared lab space. In addition to managerial and training duties, the Manager will be actively engaged in developing new contacts and driving business opportunities to Innovate Calgary and the LSI Hub.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Ensure that both the Life Sciences and Engineering Labs have appropriate staffing and operational/procedural guidelines in place to foster a safe and productive centre for developing and commercializing intellectual property;
  • Operate laboratory facilities within annually budgeted financial and objective goals;
  • Actively engage university and private industry researchers and administrators to ensure that new intellectual property being developed is afforded appropriate legal protection and a set of commercialization guidelines and timeframes is established;
  • Provide senior scientific and procedural counsel to entrepreneurial tenants;
  • Liaise with University facilities to manage access to specialized equipment and space at the University.

 

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Able to work with, prioritize and organize numerous tasks including simultaneous work on numerous assignments or projects;
  • The managerial ability to ensure that staff are fully trained in the role for which they are employed;
  • Ability to use market-based analytic judgment;
  • Business relationship management skills with a commitment to the completion of projects within a team environment;
  • Willingness to take on different levels of responsibility and independently carry projects through completion;
  • Able to work with a diverse constituency of higher education, government, and business personnel.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful graduate level qualification from an accredited college or university;
  • 5 years of scientific research and/or technology transfer/intellectual property management experience;
  • The scientific and business vocabulary necessary to communicate and fulfill the role;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills;
  • Excellent understanding of molecular biology protocols and procedures, including flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, HPLC;
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and technical problem resolutions skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or post-doctoral research experience considered an asset;
  • 2 or more years of intellectual property management experience;
  • Familiarity with the University of Calgary facilities, procedures and equipment.
