Research Associate, Continuing Medical Education, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Office of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Senior Medical Director.  This position also has reporting accountabilities to the Choosing Wisely Canada Implementation Research Network (IRN) - Alberta Lead.  

The primary purpose of this position is to support the CWC-IRN with de-implementation trials and research. This includes tasks associated with data collection, analysis, data summarization and reporting, research administration (including agreements, ethics applications and compliance, and reporting), and supporting the team in the execution of de-implementation research protocols focused on reducing imaging in uncomplicated low back pain and pre-operative testing for low risk patients undergoing a low risk surgery.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Participate as a team member in data collection, cleaning, coding, analyses and reports
  • Create or modify data collection or other instruments (e.g., questionnaires, focus group or interview protocols) in conjunction with research team
  • Design, operate and maintain databases
  • Develops and implements data entry systems for research projects primarily using database software
  • Performs statistical and descriptive analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Extracts, merges, manipulates and analyzes data as needed
  • Manage and summarize responses
  • Advise on the analysis and interpretation of findings for collaborative publications and presentations
  • Assist in the development of materials for dissemination (including local, national meetings, and international conferences and seminars)
  • Recommend changes to improve methods, procedures and implementation practices
  • Organize, attend and contribute to meetings with key stakeholders, as required
  • Act as a key broker, liaison and support for research team members at local and national levels, national and local patient advisors, health care provider and/or system stakeholders, as required
  • Assist in the preparation of drafts and/or sections of documentation for ethics, funding agencies, manuscripts, presentations
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions, being aware of the complex nature of a local and national multi-stakeholder environment
  • Support best practices in maintaining confidential and sensitive information and records
  • Ensure studies and work comply with CHREB, FOIPP, University Archives and other regulatory bodies
  • Manages own time, and competing priorities and deadlines, effectively

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree in epidemiology or other related health sciences field
  • Minimum 3 years of technical experience in related discipline
  • Demonstrated skill in quantitative data analysis (i.e. SPSS, SAS, Access) and with qualitative data analysis (i.e., NVivo)
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating large research projects and teams, including research budgets, compliance (CHREB/FOIPP) and records management
  • Demonstrated competence in the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of findings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative local and national research team, including liaising with health care professionals and staff, patient advocates, and stakeholder organizations, among others
  • Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong working knowledge of University practices, procedures, and systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, eFIN, IRISS, Sharepoint)
