The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning and the Campus Mental Health Strategy at the University of Calgary are accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in mental health and wellbeing in postsecondary education.

Background and Position Description

The University of Calgary Campus Mental Health Strategy (CMHS; https://ucalgary.ca/mentalhealth/) was launched in December 2015 with the aims of improving mental health of our students, staff, faculty, and post-doctoral scholars and to create a caring and supportive campus community. To achieve these goals, 28 recommendations under six strategic focus areas were developed and are currently being implemented. 

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning (TI) is dedicated to enriching the quality and breadth of learning at the University of Calgary. The Institute supports teaching and learning growth and development across the academy, ensures the meaningful integration of learning technologies into course and curriculum design, promotes high-impact student experiences such as experiential learning and undergraduate research experiences, and fosters research to better understand and improve student learning.

The Taylor Institute collaboratively gathers people from across university campuses to inspire and be inspired by new pedagogical thought, conversation and practice. Several recommendations in the University of Calgary’s Campus Mental Health Strategy (CMHS) target the intersection of mental health and wellbeing and teaching and learning, as well as creating courses in resilience. A Teaching and Learning Subcommittee was created to advise on, initiate, and steward projects that address these recommendations. To further advance this work, the CMHS and the Taylor Institute have partnered to create a postdoctoral scholar position addressing this emerging topic.

The mental health and well-being in postsecondary education Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute actively to the emerging landscape of the intersection between mental health and wellbeing and teaching and learning at the University of Calgary. A primary focus of this work will be collaborating with the Teaching and Learning Subcommittee of the CMHS to further research in this area and support the development, implementation, and evaluation of professional learning opportunities and resources for educators within the classroom and broader university learning context. This position represents a novel and significant step in the advancement of the field of the mental health and wellbeing within the Canadian postsecondary context. The successful candidate will work with a group of advisors that will help set the direction of work during the term as well as offer on-going mentorship and support.

The remuneration is a stipend of $52,000/year, plus an extended health benefit plan and $3,000 to support professional learning and scholarly dissemination. Postdoctoral scholars have access to services of the Staff Wellness Centre and the Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) offered through the University of Calgary.

Qualifications

  • PhD or doctorate degree in any discipline (with preference to a mental health-related field), awarded within the three years immediately preceding the appointment
  • Evidence of passion, interest and abilities in teaching and learning in a postsecondary context
  • Evidence of strong understanding of mental health with prior research in this area preferred
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate professional learning initiatives and resources that bridge mental health and teaching and learning
  • Evidence of expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods.  Expertise and experience in program evaluation considered an asset
  • Openness to a range of disciplinary approaches to the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning, and an ability to work in interdisciplinary contexts
  • Strong communication, project management, interpersonal, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively.
