Position Description

In December 2018, Jack Anderson and Wynne Chisholm gifted the University of Calgary a 19,000 acre, 1000 head cow-calf ranch. In support of this generous donation, the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for three tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level to further develop and support the research themes at the WA Ranches. Research themes will be applying a One Health approach to animal health and welfare, as well as focusing on the interface among human, animal and environmental health. All positions include a commitment to teach, conduct research and engage in professional and university service. Successful candidates will join an established team of cattle researchers and educators and will be essential to development of an internationally recognized Beef Centre for Excellence. W.A. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Assistant Professor (Tenure-track), Beef Cattle Welfare and Behavior, WA Ranches

Applications are invited for an assistant professor, tenure-track, faculty position in beef cattle welfare and behavior. The expectation is that this will be a majority research appointment (60-70%) with a focus on the cow-calf phase of the beef cycle, up to 30% of the appointment will involve instruction of welfare and behavior in our DVM curriculum, and the remaining 10% will involve departmental and university service.

Qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in applied animal ethology or related field and excellence in scholarly research and teaching; a DVM degree is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, innovative, and extramurally funded research program in beef cattle welfare and behavior and supervise graduate students.  

UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. The DVM program at UCVM provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 30-32 students per year, with a class expansion anticipated bringing class size to 50 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
