PeopleSoft System Administrator - Sr. Technical Application Specialist, ERP Systems and Services, Information Technologies

Position Overview

Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Regular PeopleSoft System Administrator - Sr. Technical Application Specialist.

TAS team members report to the Architect, Application. The nature of the job requires a well-rounded knowledge of all aspects of the PeopleSoft architecture. A Technical Application Specialist (TAS) is an expert in PeopleSoft ERP software administration, as well as Windows and LINUX System administration. The TAS team works closely with a wide range of individuals within IT, across the campus and with external vendors to determine the needs of the community to deliver the framework for a stable, high performing ERP system.

Due to operational requirements, Technical Application Specialists are often required to work outside of normal business hours. During projects, work is driven by deadlines with a large number of resources reliant on the success of TAS initiatives. Thus, TAS team members may be required to work long hours.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Technical Analysis / System Design

  • Design PeopleSoft middleware infrastructure and environments, developing strategies for product installations, upgrades and version migrations
  • Provide specialist level technical expertise in recommending, planning and implementing technical solutions to support the PeopleSoft/Oracle ERP business systems
  • Continuing one’s own development as a technical leader and consultant
  • Design and implement refresh procedures for non-production environments such as: Development, Unit Test, Quality Assurance, User Acceptance
  • Advising senior IT management in regards to emerging technology directions and subsequent PeopleSoft upgrade opportunities

System Support and Problem Resolution

  • Supervise and mentor other PeopleSoft Support staff including the Application Developers and the Intermediate Technical Application Specialists
  • Provide technical application support to the entire PeopleSoft Support team, both functional and technical
  • Installation and support of PeopleSoft infrastructure products such as: Capacity and Performance Management, Middleware, Web Services, Authentication, Security, Transaction Management, Batch Scheduling, Integration Broker (Application Messaging), Application Development Tools and System interfaces
  • Ensuring that documentation is properly initiated, authorized and maintained
  • Maintaining confidentiality of user profiles, account information, and other sensitive University and Personal data
  • Maintaining positive working relationships with key constituents
  • Maintaining current and timely communications across other units in the department on matters of mutual interest and importance
  • Developing tools and procedures for other groups to manage the production system
  • Liaising with Oracle and other vendors when reporting and managing problems with delivered functionality
  • Leading the collection and analysis of Peoplesoft component performance tuning. Implementing and testing performance tuning resolutions
  • Leading the recovery and restoration of data and services following interruptions
  • Management of Peoplesoft fixes, patches and maintenance bundles


  • Ensuring that the core PeopleSoft administrative system is operating reliably and efficiently
  • Ensuring that management is kept informed of activities, issues and progress with projects
  • Developing tools for other groups to monitor the health of the PeopleSoft systems on a 24x7 basis

Code management

  • Creating process and procedures for configuration and code management
  • Moving code between development, test and production systems
  • Documenting and implementing Phire Architect to manage change in all PeopleSoft environments
  • Managing the tools to provide approval workflow

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Computing Science
  • PeopleSoft Technical Certification
  • Experience with systems administration in an ERP (Version 8.5x plus) browser based application environment
  • Specific areas of expertise should include experience with PeopleSoft/Oracle system & database implementations, upgrades, and version migrations
  • Experience building PeopleSoft system interfaces
  • Experience with system integrity, security and access controls, system performance monitoring and capacity planning
  • Experience with database management software, preferably Oracle
  • Proven technical leadership managing projects
  • Experience in working collaboratively with other technical analysts, applications developers, network and operational staff
  • Specialist level understanding of PeopleTools technology
  • Installing and upgrading PeopleSoft environment operating systems, databases, layered products and system services
  • Installing and upgrading PeopleTools, PeopleCode, Crystal Reports, IBM Websphere, SQR, TUXEDO, COBOL, Batch Schedulers and other PeopleSoft related middleware and development tools
  • Well rounded knowledge of all aspects of the PeopleSoft architecture from both a technical and functional perspective
  • PeopleSoft application development experience is an asset. Experience with Phire Architect is an asset
  • Proven mentorship and staff development skills
  • Advanced problem solving capabilities
  • Proven abilities in resolving problems quickly and efficiently under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain complicated technical issues in non-technical terms
  • Proven ability to communicate with all levels of management and staff
  • 5 to 8 years progressive experience with PeopleSoft middleware
  • Experienced in performance testing web-based, client-server and middleware applications, including PeopleSoft, using tools such as HP Performance Center, Load Runner, and JMeter
  • Experience developing performance engineering strategies, determining the performance test approach to fit business requirements
  • Experience creating test cases, and work plan, as well as designing test scenarios
  • Experience creating performance test scripts and configuring performance tests, as well as executing performance tests and analyzing the results
  • Well versed with the behavior of online monitors and the techniques to fix monitoring issues
  • Familiar with using Perfmon, SiteScope, New Relic, etc
  • Knowledge of functional, stress/volume, regression, user acceptance and integration testing
  • Knowledge of performance tuning activities
