Research Associate, Health Policy, School of Public Policy

Position Overview

The School of Public Policy invites applications for a Research Associate, Health Policy . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Research and will involve working at the School of Public Policy Office (downtown campus) and potentially at a range of off-campus locations during data collection research phases. This Research Associate position is focused on supporting and facilitating the execution of two funded mixed-methods research projects that target improvements in: 1) the provincial acute and primary care responses to the COVID-19 outbreak; and 2) the way antibiotics are prescribed in Alberta's primary care system.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Works independently and applies skills in data collection and analysis, as well as bibliographic research
  • Compares and/or validates results or methodologies with established literatures
  • Applies project management skills to organize time effectively so that research results are produced by set deadlines that support overall project timelines; this Research Associate will be a secondary contact point for data collection and analysis, and will collaborate regularly and closely with team members (i.e., participation in project meetings and brainstorming sessions) as required or to conduct research, obtain and verify results
  • Follows guidelines by the PI and/or senior team members for completion of data analysis but may recommend changes to research methods
  • RESEARCH:
    • Undertakes, under the guidance of the PI and/or senior team members, analysis using qualitative methodology to understand how interventions impact the prescribing behaviour of primary care physicians and the quality improvement capacity of primary care networks; this includes reviewing the relevant literature and preparing precise reports; scheduling and gathering qualitative data; applying theoretically grounded coding and analytic frameworks (as developed with the PI and senior team) to data working with PI and senior team requirements to develop findings into policy-relevant and academic documents and presentations for stakeholders
    • Specifically, the successful candidate will:
      • Synthesize the existing grey and academic literatures to develop appropriate practical and theoretical frameworks for interpreting data and writing up findings
      • Work with partner organizations and the PI/senior team to support the recruitment, scheduling, and conduct of in-person interviews and site visits with primary care physicians, AHS employees, community-based organizations, and others
      • Contribute to evaluations of policy implications of the results and develops carefully considered recommendations for practical and effective policy responses based on data analysis
  • COMMUNICATION:
    • Assist with stakeholder engagement and consultation meetings
    • Regularly updates project team on project and data management statuses, and works with the PI/senior team to develop reports of results using excellent policy and academic writing skills
    • Presentation and communication of research and research results to a variety of audiences and in different venues is also involved (i.e. presentations at local and provincial conferences, workshops, team meetings as well as portions of drafts for scholarly publication)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate level training and related experience in public policy, public and global health, and health services research; minimum of a Master's degree, in hand
  • Practical experience in public policy and/or health services research projects is an asset; the preferred candidate will have 2 or more years experience in health services research with progressively increasing responsibilities, preferably in the fields noted above
  • Knowledge of current research and policy in Canadian efforts to combat COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance, as well as the One Health approach is an asset
  • Understanding of the scientific processes and underlying theories that support ethnography is essential
  • Understanding of the scientific processes and underlying theories that support cognitive task analysis is a significant asset
  • Knowledge of bibliographic research methods and familiarity with PubMed and other relevant databases is essential
  • Experience with qualitative software (NVivo), citation and bibliographic software (EndNote), as well as Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are significant assets
  • Experience managing complex projects and working collaboratively with clinical professionals, cross-functional teams and stakeholders is an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is essential
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and organize work, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in performance of day-to-day duties while remaining adaptable and flexible in a fast-moving and changing environment is a significant asset
  • Strong organizational skills in the collection, maintenance and organization of significant amount of qualitative data are a significant asset
  • Ability to follow established procedures for research work, while also displaying the ability to be innovative with respect to suggesting new procedures/evaluation methods
  • Internet and computer access is required, as well as webcam capability
