Position Overview

The University of Calgary in Qatar is currently seeking a Public Services & Information Technology Librarian.

The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), located in Doha, Qatar, offers a nursing program at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level, as well as Foundation courses in English language, sciences, mathematics and academic skills development.  The UCQ Learning Commons provides library, learning, teaching, research, writing, and technology support to the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Calgary Qatar as well as the nursing community in Qatar.  The Learning Commons Mission is:  To provide resources and services that enable the University of Calgary – Qatar community to discover, evaluate, apply, and communicate information for learning, teaching, and professional practice.

The primary purpose of the position is to provide library and research support for the UCQ campus community through a variety of functions. The main responsibilities of this role include overseeing library systems and information technology, access services, and collection development. In addition, all librarians participate in providing research and reference services and information literacy support.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in overseeing library systems, and providing access, reference and research services in an academic environment. This position will be attractive to a self-motivated and adaptable individual with excellent communication and collaborative skills with a strong user-centered focus.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and maintains ILS and other Learning Commons technologies and systems including the LC website and internal SharePoint site
  • Collects library usage data from library systems and sites and prepares statistical summaries
  • Serves as the technology and system liaison with the University of Calgary Libraries
  • Provides internal training and support to Library staff on ILS and technology-based services
  • Ensures the effective operation of the library service desk through staff scheduling and support for student assistant staff
  • Provides research, reference, and information literacy support both in-person and online
  • Develops and maintains subject guides and other online reference and research resources
  • Participates in the hiring, training and co-supervision of library student assistants
  • Engages in collection development and coordinates technical services such as cataloguing and acquisitions
  • Promotes new library resources to students and faculty
  • Serves as the copyright advisor on campus and liaison with the University of Calgary copyright office
  • Contributes to Learning Commons operations and initiatives, including the development of strategic and annual plans
  • Identifies, implements, and promotes innovative ways to support the community of nurse and allied-health professionals
  • Participates in scholarship, professional development and service

Qualifications / Requirements:

Required:

  • Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship or recognized equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years relevant professional experience in an academic library environment
  • Demonstrated experience working with Integrated Library and Discovery systems, (Alma and Primo in particular) and library information technology
  • Experience in providing library access and information services
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a variety of groups in collaborative and cooperative situations.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both orally and written

Preferred:

  • Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship or recognized equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years relevant professional experience in an academic library environment

  • Experience in providing library access and information services
