Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.  

The Research Associate will be an epidemiologist. They will be required to possess a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, technical aspects and practices essential to performing and directing complex research projects that have a chronic liver disease focus. The Research Associate's role will be multifaceted, and will involve directing the overall research program in collaboration with the PI and his primary collaborators. Research activities will encompass a variety of projects at local, national and international levels. In addition to helping design studies and conduct critical analyses, the Research Associate will also play a pivotal role in developing the concept, drafting, writing, authoring, submitting and revising manuscripts and grants.   

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Project Development and Leadership:
  • Along with the Principle Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the overall research program related to chronic liver disease
  • Direct the research program together with the PI and his primary collaborators
  • Collaborate in designing research projects that will attract external funding and lead to high-impact peer-reviewed publications
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
  • Identify and secure research funding opportunities
  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Design, develop and oversee research projects for summer students, graduate & post-doctoral students
• Use of technical knowledge & expertise:
  • Large chronic liver disease administrative databases as well as detailed clinical databases exist at the Calgary liver unit and the Principal Investigator's research program. A PhD in epidemiology with a strong foundation in biostatistics will be essential in designing and conducting research that has a chronic liver disease focus in this environment
  • Oversee the implementation and conduct of research products
  • Provide expert analytical assistance on research products
  • Completes accurate and timely statistical analyses of research data in accordance with project objectives and deliverables
  • Author scientific publications
  • Author grants

Qualifications / Requirements:

• PhD in epidemiology required and postdoctoral experience an asset; medical field preferred and within gastroenterology and hepatology considered an asset
•  At least 5 years of experience in research design and a strong foundation in biostatistics mandatory
• Worked in clinical and medical epidemiology field, required
• Proficiency with large databases (i.e. Microsoft SharePoint, Access and Oracle SQL), database design, statistical software (i.e. SAS) and electronic medical records
• Knowledgeable in writing research protocols
• Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication and strong academic writing skills required
• High productivity is a must (having >4 papers as first or second author is highly anticipated)
• Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent leadership and organizational skills required
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in an effective, efficient manner and to delegate tasks appropriately
• Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
• Proficiency in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills to produce reports - Knowledge and experience addressing data quality issues in a health care setting is an asset
