Position Overview

The Career Development Centre in the Haskayne School of Business is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Graduate Career Consultant for approximately 1 year.

Reporting to the Manager, Haskayne Career Development Centre, the Graduate Career Consultant supports business graduate students in their career and professional development. The Graduate Career Consultant is responsible for educating business graduate students on career readiness and success upon completion of their program.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Student Advising and Engagement

  • Provide on-going personal consultations, career and industry research, networking contacts, job search strategies, personal branding strategies, résumé and cover letter review, business process, and tracking tools for job search and salary negotiations
  • Develop strong relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultures in order to prepare students and alumni for transition into employment
  • Develop and lead skills workshops, tutorials, and events on various topics related to career readiness/preparedness
  • Represent the career interests of the students on internal and external committees and working groups as required
  • Liaise with other University staff and offices to monitor and/or respond to student or employer inquiries as needed
  • Set appropriate goals with students to address identified career goals and expectations
  • Work 1:1 with students delivering career advising services or redirecting to other resources on and off campus as required
  • Support the identification and promotion of relevant employment opportunities to students
  • Generate statistical summaries of employer contact (seminars, consultations, résumé critiques) in a timely basis; analyze results and adapt future service offerings

Business Development / Stakeholder Engagement

  • Research organizations that could benefit from hiring / mentoring a student to support their workforce strategy
  • Liaise with corporate representatives to determine qualifications desired for short-term student work placements
  • Coordinate luncheons, meet and greet events, mentorship events, and informational interviews with representatives in Industry and students
  • Facilitate connections between students, industry representatives, and employers
  • Support the University's strategic objectives and direction - Energizing Eyes High - when interacting with industry representatives
  • Obtain paid internships and full time employment opportunities for graduate students; identify job share prospects
  • Provide advice to employers on potential roles and job descriptions for students and new grads
  • Recruit and invite industry speakers to partner with the School by advising students on career opportunities and to participate in mentorship programs and student activities organized by the Haskayne Career Centre

Other

  • Research and propose strategies to result in increased number of employment opportunities for students and graduates across a range of business sectors, both for profit and non-profit
  • Remain current on employment and labour market trends that may initiate change in program policies and procedures, and changes/trends in the industry/employment market
  • Perform other related tasks that support the achievement of the program's strategic direction and vision
  • Contribute to the content of the Haskayne Career Development Centre website and other online career development resources
  • Leverage the use of other resources to provide appropriate solutions where necessary
  • Work effectively within a team environment in service development (strategic planning) and service delivery
  • Continue own personal development, learning and training; maintain standing in professional organizations relevant to the position, and participate in these organizations in a way that will reflect positively on the University
  • Assist with the annual surveying and reporting of graduate employment information and statistics for Haskayne students in accordance with internationally established MBA Career Services Council policies and practices (MBA CSEA)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MBA Degree or equivalent education and experience; career coaching certification is an asset
  • Minimum seven years experience in a professional services environment, such as: human resources / talent acquisition/management, career services, or employment consulting environment required
  • Experience in program management, recruitment (talent acquisition), career advising, and employer relations
  • B2B sales, marketing and/or corporate recruitment experience
  • A strong and thorough understanding of the employment and placement industry and labour market trends in Calgary and Alberta required
  • Strong knowledge of the Calgary and western Canadian business economy and employer needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clients/students, staff, and stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated experience in post-secondary student advising, coaching, mentorship, and career development
  • Experience in workshop development and delivery, and event planning
  • High level of personal effectiveness, able to work independently, and strong organizational skills, together with the ability to work to deadlines while managing multiple tasks
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Results oriented while showing initiative to identify areas for improvement and potential solutions
  • Proven record of success in working in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities, while providing excellent customer service
  • Proven experience in conducting market research and analysis
  • Experience with data analysis; e.g. interpreting employment trends and forecasts - leading to recommendations of new, innovative approaches, or processes; graduate survey results interpretation and reporting
  • Strong computer skills in a Windows environment and Microsoft Office
