Position Overview

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for two (2) Research Assistant(s). This Fixed Term Recurring Part time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and will be working at the Alberta Children's Hospital.  

The primary areas the Research Assistant will be involved with are:

  1. recruitment, screening, consenting and scheduling of research participants,
  2. collection of behavioral and clinical outcomes data
  3. data preparation, analysis and management
  4. assistance with literature reviews, grant and manuscript preparation and submission

The Research Assistant will work in both an office, completing tasks on a computer, and in a clinical research setting, working with research participants on recruitment, screening, consent and study procedures.

This is a recurring part time position with variable hours.  Recurring part time employes are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Upholds the strongest ethical and privacy standards
  • Coordinates participant recruitment, screening and consenting
  • Schedules, coordinates and executes participant study visits
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures Principal Investigator is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrates strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Provides mentoring and direction to others on the research team (e.g. research students)
  • Generates PowerPoint presentations on behalf of Principal Investigator and research team, to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders and assists with presenting as required
  • Generates various reports as required by Principal Investigator and research team
  • Compiles tables, charts, graphs, and summarized statistics for integration in research papers and reports. This includes materials for presentation and publication
  • Processes data using statistical software to conduct analyses in support of the research project
  • Collects, consolidates, cross-tabulates and formats data from various sources to prepare draft reports
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or Health Sciences (can be related field such as Biomedical Sciences, Biology)
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience working in a research, health or educational environment
  • Experience working or volunteering with children and adolescents
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Resourceful, energetic, positive and creative attitude
  • Aptitude and interest in working with children
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in statistical software programs (eg. SAS, STATA)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council)
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
