Position Overview

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Bioinformatician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute is participating in a multi-disciplinary translational research program called the Alberta Cellular Therapy and Immune ONcology (ACTION) initiative, which seeks to develop next-generation cellular immunotherapies and deliver them to cancer patients in Alberta and beyond. 

The Bioinformatician will be part of the ACTION team, reporting directly to the Principal Investigator.   

The Primary Purpose of the bioinformatician is to implement and develop workflows for multi-omic datasets generated through ACTION with the goal of identifying immunotherapy targets.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Implement pipelines for analysis of bulk and single-cell RNAseq datasets
  • Perform supervised and unsupervised analyses of expression differences at the gene, exon/isoform, and protein level using in-house and public datasets, using clustering and/or network approaches
  • Implement pipelines to detect somatic alterations (including CNA/SVs, SNVs/indels), determine their clonality, and infer tumor phylogenies
  • Predict the effect of coding mutations on protein structure and function, including HLA binding
  • Integrate genomic, expression, and proteome datasets to identify candidates suitable for further development as cellular therapy targets
  • Design and execute moderately complex in silico experiments with minimal supervision
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation
  • Disseminate results through conference presentations and publications
  • Establish and maintain effective and productive relationship with other members of Charbonneau and ACTION, and contribute to training of junior team members
  • Provide accurate and timely milestone reports in accordance with project objectives and deliverables

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate degree Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, or related field required.  MSc required, PhD preferred
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (such as Python or R)
  • Experience with Linux / Unix working environments
  • Previous experience working on a high-performance computing cluster an asset
  • Expertise with analysis and algorithm development on complex NGS datasets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to exercise judgement within established guidelines
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
