Position Description

The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Drama invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach the following courses in the Fall 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most Fall 2020 courses at the University of Calgary will be offered as online/remote courses. Accommodations have been made for experiential courses, however, and some courses will be offered in a blended format, with both online and in-person classes. All in-person classes will adhere to social distancing.

Applicants must have experience delivering courses in a remote setting, which includes evidence of successful use of online lectures, student participation channels, and assessment methods. 

The Fall term runs from Monday, August 31st to Wednesday December 23, 2020; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING FUNDING AND SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS. 

Fall 2020

ACTING

DRAM 209 Introduction to Acting I
Course Description: An introduction to creative resources and practices for the actor.

3 sections available:
1.    Fall 2020 SEM S01 Mon 08:00-10:50 a.m. Web-based (synchronous), LAB B01 Wed 08:00-09:50 a.m. In-person. Sessional hired at 1.0 HCE.
2.    Fall 2020 SEM S03 Thurs 08:00-10:50 a.m. Web-based (synchronous), LAB B03 Wed 08:00-09:50 a.m. In-person. Sessional hired at 1.0 HCE.
3.    Fall 2020 SEM S04 Thurs 17:00-18:50 p.m. Web-based (synchronous), LAB B01 Sat 09:00-11:50 a.m. In-person. Sessional hired at 1.0 HCE.

DRAM 301 Intermediate Acting I - ACTING (Voice Lab not included)
Course Description: Further development of fundamental acting techniques and creative processes essential to the actor's craft. Introduction of voice and movement components for the actor.

DRAM 400 Advanced Acting I - VOICE LAB 
Course Description: Advanced practice of creative, technical and interpretive aspects of acting with emphasis on the integration of physical, vocal and textual components.

1 section available:
1.    Fall 2020 LAB B01 Fri 09:00 - 11:50 a.m. In-person. Sessional hired at 0.33 HCE.

Qualifications/Requirements for all Acting Courses:

  • M.F.A. in Drama with a specialization in performance and/or significant experience in professional theatre performance with professional membership in CAEA (Canadian Actors¿ Equity Association).
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver acting curriculum at the post-secondary level. Experience delivering web-based courses an asset; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.) preferred. 
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional practices of theatre-making preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.
  • Practice in performance creation is a preferred asset.

THEATRE STUDIES

DRAM 242 Introduction to the Study of Drama 
Course Description: An introduction to the study of drama, theatre and performance.

DRAM 346 Seminar in Drama I
Course Description:  Critical examination of plays performed in Drama's season; staging requirements for contemporary productions and other works by the same authors and their contemporaries may also be studied.

1 section available: 
1.     Fall 2020 LEC 01 Tues & Thurs 10:00a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Web-based (could be delivered as asynchronous). Sessional hired at 1 HCE. 

DRAM 355 Introduction to Canadian Theatre and Drama
Course Description: A study of Canadian theatre and performance using both formal and theoretical approaches.

1 section available:
1.    Fall 2020 SEM 01 Tues & Thurs 12:30 - 13:45 p.m. Web-based (could be delivered as asynchronous). Sessional hired at 1 HCE.

Qualifications/Requirements for all Theatre Studies Courses:

  • M.F.A., M.A. or PhD. in Drama with a specialization in Theatre Studies, Canadian Drama and/or Theatre History; publication record appropriate to career level. 
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver theatre studies curriculum at the post-secondary level with requisite theoretical approaches. Experience delivering web-based courses an asset; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.) preferred. 
  • Knowledge of non-traditional practices of theatre-making preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.

TECHNICAL THEATRE / PRODUCTION

DRAM 321 Stage Management
Course Description: Principles of stage management; a stage management project related to one of the presentations in Drama's season of plays.

1 section available:
1.    Fall 2020 SEM S01 M 13:00 - 14:45 Web-based (synchronous); LAB 01 B01 M 15:00 - 16:45. Sessional hired at 1 HCE.

Qualifications/Requirements for all Technical Theatre / Production Courses:

  • M.F.A. in Drama and/or significant experience in professional theatre stage management with professional membership in CAEA (Canadian Actors¿ Equity Association).
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver stage management curriculum at the post-secondary level with requisite theoretical and practical approaches. Experience delivering web-based courses an asset; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.) preferred. 
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional practices of theatre-making preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.

DESIGN

DRAM 319 Graphics and Model Building for Theatre
An introduction to graphic and model building techniques for the theatre designer.

1 section available:
1.    Fall 2020 SEM S01 Tues 14:00-15:50 p.m. Web-based; LAB B01 Thurs 14:00-15:50 In-person. Sessional hired at 1 HCE.

Qualifications/Requirements for all Technical Theatre / Production Courses:

  • M.F.A. in Drama with a Design specialization and/or significant experience in professional theatre design with professional membership in ADC (Associated Designers of Canada).
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver design curriculum at the post-secondary level with requisite theoretical and practical approaches. Experience delivering web-based courses and asset; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.) preferred. 
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional practices of theatre-making preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.
