Position Description
The Division of Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures invites applications for a Sessional Instructor to teach the following courses in the upcoming fall semester.
CHIN 205 LEC 02 MWRF 12:00-12:50 Beginners' Chinese I and
LAB 02 T 12:00-12:50
CHIN 353 LEC 01 MWF 11:00-11:50 Introduction to Chinese Language & Linguistics
Additionally, the Division is seeking an individual to provide advising and student placement responsibilities for the Chinese program effective 1 August, 2020 - 30 April, 2021. Remuneration for this work will be additional to any teaching assigned.
Qualifications:
An MA or above in linguistics, Chinese, second-language pedagogy, education, or another relevant field; native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin and English; and a demonstrable record of excellence in teaching.
The University of Calgary will use online modes of course delivery in the fall term. The instructor of this course should be comfortable with online modes of course delivery and students¿ remote learning. The instructor will be responsible for thoughtful course design and meaningful opportunities for student engagement. At least 1 of the 3 letters must directly address the applicant's teaching ability.
The successful candidate will have an MA or above, native or near-native proficiency in both Mandarin and English, and will teach in English.
Active programmatic involvement and close collaboration with our faculty to advance the Chinese language, literature and culture program are also expected. Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching and scholarly potential.
Doctoral students are eligible to apply for sessional instructor positions only if they have been given permission by their supervisor. Normally, doctoral students will only be permitted to teach if they have successfully passed their Candidacy Exam. Student applicants should consider taking the Instructional Skills Workshop at the Teaching and Learning Centre.
