Position Description

The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Dance invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach the following courses in the Fall 2020.
 
Lectures for the Fall 2020 term run from September 8 – December 9, 2020. Individual course dates are noted below; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING FUNDING AND SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS. 
 
DNCE 201: Introductory Contemporary Dance I
Course dates: September 8 - December 9, 2020
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:00pm to 01:50pm
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-2)
Course description: Introductory study of the techniques of contemporary dance.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A WEB-BASED COURSE.
 
DNCE 211: Introductory Jazz I
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Mondays & Wednesdays, 08:00am to 09:50am
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-2)
Course description: Introductory study of the techniques of jazz dance.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A WEB-BASED COURSE.
 
DNCE 247: Introduction to Creative Process
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 02:00pm to 03:50pm
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-2)
Course description: A creation-based course in basic movement analysis and creative process focusing on the identification and development of personal movement preferences.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A HYBRID OFFERING WITH BOTH IN-PERSON AND WEB-BASED COMPONENTS.

DNCE 267: Introduction to Dance Studies
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Mondays and Wednesdays, 2-3:15 pm
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-2)
Course description: Introduction to dance theory, history, and criticism.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A WEB-BASED COURSE.
 
DNCE 295A: Performance Practicum I
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Fridays, 2:30 to 4:30 pm; other times TBA
Course hours: 1.5 units; H(1S-3)
Course description: Practical experience in dance performance.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A HYBRID OFFERING WITH BOTH IN-PERSON AND WEB-BASED COMPONENTS.

DNCE 321/421: Elementary Ballet I/Intermediate Ballet I
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, 10:00am to 11:50am
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-4)
Course description: Elementary/Intermediate study of the techniques of ballet.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A WEB-BASED COURSE.
 
DNCE 405/505: Intermediate Contemporary Dance II/Advanced Contemporary Dance I
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 12:00pm to 01:50pm
Course hours: 3 units; H(2S-4)
Course description: Further intermediate/advanced study of the techniques of contemporary dance.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A HYBRID OFFERING WITH BOTH IN-PERSON AND WEB-BASED COMPONENTS.
 
DNCE 449: Dance Pedagogy: Children and Youth
Course dates: September 8 – December 9, 2020
Mondays & Wednesdays, 04:00pm to 05:50pm
Course hours: 3 units; (2-2)
Course description: An overview of the approaches to dance pedagogy for teaching children and youth in public schools and studio contexts.
FOR FALL 2020, THIS WILL BE A WEB-BASED COURSE.
 
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Possession of a Master's or Bachelor’s degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis. 
  • Professional experience in dance.
  • Outstanding professional achievement or substantial training in the field specified in the job announcement. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities. 
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience at the university level. 
Desirable Skills and Abilities:
  • Energy, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence in teaching. •  
  • The willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, varying abilities, motivations, and academic or vocational goals. 
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment. 
  • The ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current literature on dance.

As per the Collective Agreement, the SCPA will adhere to the right of first refusal terms (Section 23.12.1 and 23.12.2) for Sessional Appointments.
