Position Overview

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

 This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and will contribute to the Canadian Mountain Assessment (CMA), a core activity of the Canadian Mountain Network (2019-2024). The Canadian Mountain Network (CMN) supports the resilience and health of Canada's mountain peoples and places through research partnerships based on Indigenous and Western ways of knowing that inform decision-making and action. CMN aims to position Canada as a global leader in mountain research. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work on a systematic literature review of published research related to Canada's mountain regions
  • Provide additional research support and planning assistance related to the broader knowledge synthesis efforts of CMA
  • Carries out research independently under the direction of the CMA project lead
  • Ensure that the immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities and progress of work, generally with weekly updates (written or in an informal presentation)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in geography or environmental science. A graduate degree, self-directed research experience, and high academic marks are favorable assets
  • Experience designing research studies using quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
  • Experience collecting, analysing, and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Experience with Environmental science & policy and Canadian mountain regions and issues
