Position Overview

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Research Manager.  The Research Associate position encompasses technical, analytical, organizational, project management/coordination and communication functions related to health economics, health services research and patient engagement research projects.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordination

    • Prepare project work plans, coordinate and administer research projects per established study protocols and study operating procedures

    • Coordinate project team meetings including documentation and follow up of action items

    • Coordinate knowledge translation plans and activities for research studies and the research team

  • Research

    • Complete research ethics submissions, amendments and renewals as required

    • Responsible for confidential research data management

    • Conduct analyses of quantitative and qualitative data

    • Review and synthesize relevant literature and evidence

    • Recruit and explain research to study participants as necessary

    • Perform regular quality control checks on data entries

  • Communication

    • Document meetings in the form of minutes with action items and outcomes; distribute and follow up appropriately

    • Work closely with the study team(s) in the development of documents for the purpose of reporting to the investigative team and stakeholders (including the public), as well as poster and oral presentations for research dissemination, and manuscript preparation for publication

    • Communicate research findings through knowledge translation plans and activities for research studies and the research team

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's Degree (required) - Health sciences, Health Economics, Health Services Research, Epidemiology or Public Health
  • 2 - 5 years related research experience
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Experience with knowledge translation activities (including but not limited to drafting research abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, research team communications, newsletters, announcements, social media, annual reports, and developing novel knowledge translation ideas)
  • Skills in analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Experience with simulation modelling is an asset
  • Experience with analytic software (SPSS, SAS, STATA, R, NVivo)
  • Previous experience working in a health institution and working with patients will be appreciated but not required
  • Previous experience conducting qualitative focus groups or interviews is appreciated but not required
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good verbal communicator, with English language fluency, a good listener, and ability to clarify requested information
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (e.g. Tri Council)
  • Demonstrated ability in professional scientific writing (including but not limited to manuscripts, abstracts, reports)
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews for scientific publication
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
