Position Description

Area: Air Pollution Epidemiology

Duration: 1 year

Start Date: October 1st or later

Salary: $50,000 per year plus benefits

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Air Pollution Epidemiology.

Job Description:

We have a position for postdoctoral training in air pollution epidemiology. The postdoctoral scholar will examine the connection between air pollution exposure and cancer under the supervision of Dr. Cheryl Peters, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology and Research Scientist in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research at Alberta Health Services, with support from other collaborators on the CIHR-funded project (https://webapps.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/decisions/p/project_details.html?applId=421855&lang=en)

The purpose of this study is to use contemporary and highly spatially resolved Canadian data sources to investigate whether exposure to three criteria ambient air pollutants (ground level ozone (O3), annual average particulate matter of less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) and estimated annual nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) are associated with an increased risk of developing lung and other cancers (leukemia, kidney, bladder, pancreatic, brain, breast, and prostate cancers). The study will use the Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHEC), which are very large population-based linked datasets, with air pollution exposure data from CANUE (Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium). Other opportunities exist for the successful candidate to contribute to a variety of on-going and planned research studies in the area of environmental and occupational health, and the candidate will be encouraged to develop their own area of research expertise, to publish and present scholarly work, to support graduate students, and to obtain additional specialized training. The location of the position is flexible; data analysis for the main research project is limited to Statistics Canada Research Data Centres, so the candidate would need to be located in a region with access to an RDC (https://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/microdata/data-centres/community).

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have recently graduated (in the last 3 years) with a PhD in Epidemiology, Statistics, or Biostatistics and have excellent academic credentials. Evidence of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly presentations is required. The individual should have excellent statistical and analytical skills and experience with cohort analyses and large datasets (e.g. using SAS, STATA, or R). The candidate should be capable of working independently and have excellent oral and written English communication skills. Past experience working in an RDC is desirable.

Application Details:

Individuals interested in this dynamic field of research should submit their curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests and goals.

Please send application materials to:

Dr. Cheryl Peters ([email protected])

Application deadline: Applications will be reviewed as they are received until the position is filled.
