The Faculty of Science and the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Mobile Methane Sensing. This is a joint research project between the Departments of Geography and Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary. This full-time fixed term position is for one year and may be renewed contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job Description:

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: “Global Research Initiative (GRI) in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources.” The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its GRI scientific strategy to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the University of Calgary is seeking a postdoctoral scholar with expertise in engineering, atmospheric science, computer science, or geomatics.

A central focus of the research associated with this position is developing and testing an IoT-enabled sensor payload and cloud-based system to collect, process, and report methane emissions from oil and gas facilities. This research will enhance an existing hardware and software system for vehicle-based methane sensing.


The successful candidate will be expected to work within a team environment and have regular interactions with faculty, other postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students at the University of Calgary, so excellent communication skills are a must. Publication of peer-reviewed papers in high-impact scientific journals is an expectation of this position. Qualified candidates must also have:

• completed a recent PhD* in atmospheric science, engineering, geomatics or related fields and strong analytical and computational skills;
• Experience with IoT, cloud computing, and integrated multi-sensor systems.

*To be eligible as a Postdoctoral scholar at the University of Calgary, you must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five (5) years immediately preceding the appointment. Please review the Postdoc Eligibility Guidelines for more information prior to applying for this position.
