Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.  

The research assistant will be responsible for recruitment and retention of patients
with various inflammatory diseases into related projects. The RA will also be responsible for data collection on recruited study participant per study protocol.

This position will mainly work out of the Gastrointestinal Clinic at the University of Calgary Medical Clinics located in the Foothills hospital and the Endoscopy Unit. There will also be collaboration with satellite sites related to this grant. There may have to be some flexibility in working hours throughout the day depending on clinic times.

This is a recurring part-time position working approximately 18 hours per week.  Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Project Maintenance
    • Case management of patients involved; recruitment and enrolment of human subjects; and protection of subjects and subjects’ rights according to the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), Declaration of Helsinki guidelines, the Tri-council Policy Statement and through Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB) requirements
    • Develop and maintain proper ethics forms, submissions and legal documents
    • Liaise with various members of the team regarding various research projects
    • Proper collection, handling and storage of bio specimens in the biobanks
    • Maintain and manage various databases
    • Carry out statistical analysis using SAS, STATA or SPSS when required
    • Microsoft SharePoint database management including developing new databases and database contents; optimizing current database; database access provisioning; providing training for database users; supervising database content construction
    • Analysis of data when required
  • Client Services
    • Acts as an integral member of the patient care team - assessing patients, facilitating diagnostic and therapeutic testing and providing care and/or direction of care for complex patients
    • Ensure that proper care and follow up of research subjects is carried out
    • Recruit and retain participants in research related to the projects
    • Perform bio specimen collection including blood and tissue biopsy related to the biobanks
    • Explain to the patients their involvement as a research participant, as well as provide an opportunity for questions

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree in Science or a related field an asset
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • At least one year experience in a clinical research position using clinical research methodologies preferred
  • Previous contact with patients through booking, counseling, and/or research
  • Experience in bio specimen collection
  • Experience with maintaining and developing databases
  • Experience with data analysis
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access SharePoint, & Powerpoint)
  • Good working knowledge of data processing systems such as SAS, STATA and SPSS an asset
  • Knowledge of internal review boards, sponsor operations and legal obligations for research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and within a team environment
  • Strong leadership, communication and decision making skills required
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills required
