Position Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering in Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Technologist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Industrial Chair in Bituminous Materials is involved in materials science, namely in the area if asphalt materials, study and characterizing of these materials through specification testing, rheological and other ways of materials characterization, their performance in road and other constructions, development of new materials and technologies producing environmentally friendly materials with enhanced engineering properties. Chair closely cooperates with Canadian industry in introduction of new products and provides the technical and marketing support both in Canada and abroad.

Reporting to the Chairholder, the successful candidate will participate on the research activities of the Bituminous Materials Chair on different projects of characterization and development of new asphalt materials with enhanced engineering properties, studies of colloidal structure of bituminous materials, their rheology, chemistry and aging properties, and testing asphalt materials according to the different asphalt specifications.  Major part of the assignment will represent the preparation and testing of paving mixes. 

Successful candidate will be responsible for testing of bituminous materials in the laboratories of the Bituminous Materials Chair; must have the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with members of the team on simultaneous projects and have the ability to exercise sound judgement. A high impact of error exists in this role, thus candidate must be able to work safely with potential work hazards; such as large equipment.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform the routine testing of asphalt materials and paving mixes according to standards (ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Perform advanced testing of asphalt materials by chemical, thermal and rheological methods (FTIR testing, Extraction methods, Thermo-rheological testing, etc.).
  • Work on the development of new asphalt materials by different methods and technologies (distillation, air-blowing, modification by polymers and/or other means).
  • Participate on plant trials and field trials, under the Chairholder or an appointed coordinator, observe the proper workmanship, adhere to the proposed or newly developed technology, collection of the samples.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines.
  • Maintain, and operate specialized equipment including rheological, thermal, spectroscopic testing systems and instruments; apparatus for production and testing of paving mixes; and associated infrastructure including: computer operations, data acquisition systems, computer control of laboratory systems.
  • Understand the safety codes, standards, and systems related to specializations.
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, supervisor and with the campus community.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Diploma from technical college (SAIT, NAIT etc.).
  • Experience in the field of asphalt materials, materials testing, or similar field is an asset.
  • In the case of High School diploma only at least 5 years of experience in the area of asphalt materials is required. Skill in processing data for internal reports in some computer programs and in Microsoft Office applications is expected.
  • Applicant must have good communication, analytical, and organizational skills and strong capability to work in team, with positive and a can-do attitude.
