Learning Technologies Specialist, Haskayne School of Business

Position Overview

The Haskayne School of Business is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Learning Technologies Specialist.

The Learning Technologies Specialist will report to the Associate Dean, Teaching & Learning at the Haskayne School of Business and will support instructors who are using learning technologies at the University of Calgary, as well as resource development and application administration for institutionally-supported tools, including Brightspace, Yuja, and the Experiential Learning platform. The Learning Technologies Specialist will also assist with the creation and editing of audio and video material for course-based material. Specifically, the position is responsible for providing advanced workshops and consultations to enable instructors to effectively use and incorporate learning technologies, provide functional and process expertise for learning applications, and remain current in knowledge of learning technologies and practices in higher education.

The Learning Technologies Specialist has extensive knowledge in the area of learning technologies that support the Haskayne School of Business's mission, values and plans. This position is responsible for supporting instructors who are using institutional learning applications such as Brightspace, and Yuja, and the Experiential Learning platform.

The Learning Technologies Specialist collaborates and works closely with members of the Haskayne School of Business to develop, deliver, and maintain comprehensive technical training course materials and other resources. This position will assist with the creation and editing of audio and video material for course-based material. The Learning Technologies Specialist will design and implement learning opportunities that include face-to-face workshops, online and web-based sessions, and print and electronic resources. The position collaborates with and interacts directly with faculty and staff.

The Learning Technologies Specialist is responsible for providing advanced workshops and consultations to enable instructors to effectively use and incorporate learning technologies, provide functional and process expertise for learning applications, and remain current in knowledge of learning technologies and practices in higher education.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Application Administration:

  • Provides recording support and expertise and post-production editing support for course-based audio and video materials, conduct and oversee technical procedures.
  • Resolves specific and unique end-user issues for specified applications (such as the Brightspace, Adobe Connect, Yuja, and the Experiential Learning platform).
  • Provides functional and process expertise for the specified application to meet the needs of operations, research, and services.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and mitigates common user errors and knowledge gaps.
  • Understands and adheres to defined policies and standards.
  • Provides advice and feedback to the Associate Dean, Teaching & Learning, regarding the impact of changes to learning technologies based on their knowledge of instructors' needs, recommend changes to procedures and practices.

Innovation and Resource Development:

  • Develops training materials and documentation to support the use of learning technologies for end users
  • Examine new and emerging learning technologies and applications to support innovation and deals effectively with major complex tasks and issues
  • Evaluates needs and fit of learning technologies to support innovation
  • Remains current in knowledge of new and emerging learning technologies and practices in higher education
  • Actively participates in special projects to advance learning technology use and integration across the University of Calgary

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Educational Technology, Learning Sciences, or equivalent.
  • Master's degree in the same fields will be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience, knowledge, and proficiency in a wide range of online learning technologies.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a technical support field required.
  • In-depth knowledge of models, systems, technologies, and processes used for the integration of learning technologies in teaching and learning in a post-secondary setting.
  • Proficiency in recording and post-production of audio and video materials.
  • Experienced in both Windows and Mac platforms and familiar with major mobile platforms.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Current experience with workshop facilitation and presentation, including online training.
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to the specialization.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in the areas of consultation, creative problem solving, innovation, and constructive dialogue with various stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Positive, team-oriented outlook and willingness to collaborate with all colleagues. This is a highly team-oriented role involving interaction with several cooperating departments, and with exposure to all faculties and units across campus.
  • High degree of flexibility, responsiveness, and professionalism.
  • Highly self-motivated, self-managed and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team with little or no coaching and supervision.
  • Ability to determine and set own priorities and deadlines and complete them with minimal or no directions.
  • Ability to present ideas to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a rapidly changing work environment.
