Position Description

The Faculty of Social Work is seeking qualified candidates for two exciting clinical and community-based research academic positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor rank must have completed, or be near completion of, a PhD in social work or a closely related discipline. Preference is for applicants who also hold either a BSW or MSW. Applicants at the Associate Professor rank must have completed a PhD in social work or a closely related discipline along with a BSW or MSW. 

The Faculty of Social Work is committed to creating a strong connection with community partners, government organizations, and other disciplines and academic institutions, students and colleagues. 

Candidates with a primary focus on one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

• mental health and addictions;
• crisis intervention;
• suicide prevention;
• practice with families, individuals and/or groups;
• trauma-informed clinical practice;
• mental health support for Indigenous peoples; 
• practice-based and community-based counselling research; or
• other clinical direct practice related work.

Other required credentials include:

• A publication record in high impact index peer-reviewed journals, a demonstrated  track record to secure external research funds as principal investigator (for Associate Professor position), and demonstrated potential to attract external funds (for Assistant Professor position); 
• Evidence of excellence in teaching at a university level, using online delivery methods, with an interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate and graduate levels, and contributing to the ongoing development of curriculum;
• A minimum of two years full-time post degree practice experience in clinical social work or a related field;
• Knowledge to support and promote Indigenous models of practice and ways of knowing;
• Knowledge, skills, and commitment to eradicating anti-Black racism and supporting Black communities;
• Knowledge, skills, and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice;
• Evidence of securing ongoing external research funding as principal investigator;
• Evidence of success with Master’s thesis or PhD graduate student supervision;  
• Eligibility to register with Alberta College of Social Workers if holding a social work degree; and
• Evidence of past and/or potential excellence in scholarship and teaching in one of the following areas:
  • mental health and addictions;
  • crisis intervention;
  • suicide prevention;
  • practice with families, individuals and/or groups;
  • trauma-informed clinical practice;
  • mental health support for Indigenous peoples; 
  • practice-based and community-based counselling research; or
  • other clinical direct practice-related work.

The successful candidates will dedicate much of their time to community-based research, teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs, attaining tri-council funding as principal investigator, submitting scholarly works to high-quality publications, developing impactful knowledge engagement activities, and providing service at the university level and within our profession.
