The Department of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Tissue Regeneration.

Job Description:

The Biernaskie laboratory is located at the University of Calgary, within the Department of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine. Our team is comprised of enthusiastic and highly collaborative scientists with diverse expertise in stem cell biology, neuroscience, immunology, single cell genomics, bioinformatics and clinical medicine. This interdisciplinary perspective enables creativity, innovation and fosters a highly productive and rewarding training environment. Our primary interest is in stem cell biology and tissue regeneration, with a specific interest in endogenous repair following skin and brain injury.  Our work employs cutting-edge high throughput genomics/epigenomics techniques, transgenic animal models, cell transplantation and high resolution microscopy to understand the molecular events that drive tissue fibrosis and regeneration. We are currently recruiting at least one creative and highly motivated Postdoctoral fellow.  The position will allow the successful candidate to develop innovative research projects related to tissue regeneration, skin wound healing, fibroblast plasticity, aging, adult neural stem cell biology and single cell genomics/epigenomics.  Importantly, candidates are encouraged to explore their own ideas, contribute to grant writing, and to actively engage within our broader collaborative research group.


The candidate should have an interest in translational research and be able to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting. The candidate is expected to be responsible, well-organized and exhibit a natural enthusiasm for research. A PhD (or equivalent) degree completed within the last 3-years in cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, or bioinformatics is required. Expertise in immunology or bioinformatics are considered to be important assets.

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to apply for external funding opportunities, but will be guaranteed a minimum stipend of $50,000/year + benefits.

Lab Environment:
UCVM is well established amongst research-intensive North American veterinary colleges with a high quality of research programs and graduate training programs. There are over 70 faculty members, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. Descriptions of the Faculty and its departments can be found on the UCVM website ( In addition, UCVM is closely integrated with the Cumming School of Medicine, trainees will be in a unique environment of accessing outstanding research infrastructures (e.g. gnotobiotic research facility) and conducting world-class activities for comparative medical and One Health research. Moreover, Dr. Niu has established solid collaborations with a number of government research agencies ( e.g. Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Public Health Agency Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), trainees will therefore have plenty of opportunities of interacting with top research scientists disciplined in infectious disease, human and animal health.
